Massive plummet

by T
(Sydney Australia)

Hi, I was drinking some nettle tea, using natural progesterone cream (stopped abrubtly after a couple of weeks..I think because I was getting my period), taking Kelp (iodine) & DIM supplement. I took all of these to block oestrogen / increase progesterone.

I went for a blood test & noticed a massive plummet of both progesterone & oestrogen, I'm still oestrogen dominant after this and also I have next to nil progesterone.

Hope you can help me in a hurry as I have had no periods & period pain. I don't really want to take the cream just looking at foods to eat to increase progesterone & balance hormones. I was taking b6 which leveled things out but then I saw oestrogen go back after a few months of taking it. I know Magnesium & Zinc are meant to help but they give me increased period pain & bleeding...in any form.

Hi T

Progesterone does take time to work, it is not an over night fix, 2-6 months is needed. One shouldn't abruptly stop using progesterone either. The correct way is to wean off slowly. Between 100-200mg of progesterone is needed, more if you have excess estrogen and adverse symptoms. Many people are lead to believe that DIM reduces excess estrogen, it doesn't, calcium d-glucarate is better. Iodine is good support for the thyroid.

The Hormone Testing page explains what hormone levels should be.

As far as I know, no food helps to increase progesterone levels, you need to supplement with a good progesterone cream. I also have not heard of magnesium and zinc causing pain and bleeding before. Vitamin D3 is also very important as a deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone. Optimal levels are between 70-100ng/mL and nothing less than 5'000iu's is needed per day, more if you are extremely deficient. Magnesium is a co-factor for vitamin D3 and should be taken.

Please read the How to use Progesterone Cream and Estrogen Dominance pages if you have not done so already.

Weaning off

Once you reach ideal progesterone levels how would you slowly wean off?
Very tricky...not as easy I don't think.

Weaning off
by: Joy

Hi T

The best way to wean off a progesterone cream when using 100mg and more is to reduce by 25mg at a time. Stay on the reduced amount for about a week, then reduce again by another 25mg and so on. One can go cold turkey but it is far easier on the body to wean off slowly.

In your original question, you never mentioned how much progesterone you are actually taking and then you ask when do you wean off. You are then given advice, should you wish to wean off, to do so slowly, but that response to your question never asked how much progesterone you were taking in the first place. It seems to me that you were not taking enough progesterone to begin with. And were you taking extra estrogen? Because if you were, that would have made the progesterone all the more difficult to become dominant. The last thing I would be even talking about is weaning off when you need to be taking more of natural progesterone!

Over and over again on this site it talks about the importance of making progesterone the dominant hormone. If you weren't taking at least between 100-200mg of it or more, there's your reason for the problems you are having. Vitamin D levels are crucial too for it's absorption.

I miss Wray Whyte's advice. Please read all the comments over many years that she responded to so many women, and she did so putting her whole heart into it. You must do the research here not just rely on someone to answer your question no matter how good their intention is, which I am sure is the case.

Normal hormone levels.
by: T

I had a look at the hormone test page, the oestradiol range is a little vague, it ranges from 110.13 to 1468.4, could you just clarify what the ideal oestrogen is during lutueal phase? Also if you could tell what the ideal progesterone / oestrogen ratio is during lutueal phase? (serum) mine has come up as 202pmol/L oestrogen & <0.5 nmol/L for progesterone.

Thank you kindly.
