bleeding to death from estrogen domiance...

by Bleeding out
(land of oz)

Am severely anemic (hemoglobin form 7.5-8.5) from bleeding tons every few weeks. Am newly 54 years old and body just keeps trying to ovulate but almost never get progesterone rise. A couple of years ago i tried "progest" cream (I think that's the name.) Each time, it just made my estrogen higher- it also gave me varicose veins where i rubbed it in and gave me a headache. so i quit after a couple of days. but i'm desperate now: iv iron did not agree with me, tranxemic acid to control bleeding are pills that are too large for me to swallow (and says you can't crush them) - will need a transfusion soon. So thought i'd start again. this time, i got a script for prometrium. these days its all generic unfortuntately. anyway. I open the little capsule and rubbed half the pill on me yesterday mornignt and the othe half last night. each capsule contains 100 mg. Did the same this morning. So far, no headache. am not sujre its doing anythning (I think the progest was stronger) but it may have risen estrogen again (lowered boyd temp). it may also have given me a funny taste in mouth - not sure. At least i didn't get a headache, but i think the progest cream may have had more of an effect. I had posted in another place on this site, but can't find wehre i posted so thought i'd try again here. What i asked on that post is how long after I start the progesterone cream can i expect it to acutally raise my progesterone and not just raise my estrogen? only reply i got was "not long" but i'm n ot sure what that means- days or months? My concerns about progesterone include more bleeding if the absorption is not even (drops in progesterone trigger bleeding). (note if anyone has any experience with NOW progesterone cream, please let me know. I ordered that too- if the prometrium doesn't work, maybe that would be better? its 20mg only in one pump).

Hi there Please read our page on Menstruation, I've given a protocol of various supplements which stop heavy and/or continual bleeding. You will also need to use a minimum of 400mg/day progesterone. It will require using it for at least a month before you see any signs of the bleeding lessening, although some have found it works quicker. So please give it at least 3-6 months, not 2 days. It depends on how much Progest you used, as they recommend using only 20-40mg/day. The Prometrium is as you say 100mg. It's best to add it to some hand cream, it's easier to get it in and it spreads further. The strange, often metallic taste, is due to adenosine, a nucleoside which is part of the energy molecule ATP. One of the side affects of administering adenosine itself is a metallic taste in the mouth. Progesterone stimulates adenosine. Raising progesterone usually occurs within a month, see our Saliva Test results. But the benefit often takes far longer, as I said above give it 3 to 6 months. I don't know anything about the NOW cream, only the cream we make. Take care Wray

Day 3 of progestetone

Thanks for reply. I had already read your heavy bleeding suggestions. Why do u recommend such huge doses of progesterone cream? The healthy body when not not pregnant only makes 20-30 mg per day in second half of cycle. If 100percent of cream is absorbed thru skin, even 100 mg is very high. Interestingly, am thinking transdermal progesterone works differently than endogenously produced. Progesterone produced by body is thermogenic and causes a measurable rise in temperature of at least half a degree. Mine had always been clearly measurable. But this progesterone am applying to skin is not raising my body temp- yet does seem to be having several effects (that are different than estrogen so i dont think its all converting to estrogen)

Hi there I recommend the high amounts because I know they work! If there's a severe problem, 20-40mg of topical progesterone is laughable. And yes the body does make 5–40mg/day in the luteal phase, and up to 400mg/day when pregnant. But nowhere near 100% of the progesterone is absorbed through the skin, more like 10%. It very much depends on the quality of the cream too, if thick the % will be even less. Gels and oils are less efficient than emulsions, see here. See our page on Progesterone Misconceptions for more info. The typical 20-40mg/day that is recommended does not raise levels to that found in the luteal phase. One study found that using 40mg/day "…. only low plasma progesterone levels were found (median 2.5 nmol/l)". This is 0.78ng/ml, not 40mg. The ranges for the luteal phase are 15.9 - 63.6 nmol/L (5 to 20 ng/ml). Men secrete <3.18 nmol/L (<1 ng/ml), see here. Progesterone is converted to testosterone before converting to oestrogen, so many of the symptoms women experience are testosterone dominance. Take care Wray
