About to begin progesterone therapy

by Nicola
(England)

I'm a 46 year old women struggling to maintain my career, marriage and sanity for approx a week each month. I've completed the 100 point questionaire and scored 72.

I experience a multitude of debilitating symptoms including tenderness, bloating, joint pains, very heavy bleeds, painful and "flooding", loss of control emotionally, anger, rage and tearfulness for days on end whilst off sick from work. I honestly do not know how my poor husband puts up with me as I turn into another person for a week each month. I've tried all sorts of pain relief and I've recently undergone a laparoscopy which showed all was "normal" physiologically.

This weekend I've reached my wits end having "flooded " and been monsterous to my husband in a local superstore. Thank goodness I've found your website, having read the extremely useful and reasuring info have contacted my GP to discus beginning progesterone cream/patches. I will try this as soon as possible and will let you know how I do. Having read the info you provide I now feel hopeful - THANKYOU.

About to begin progesterone therapy
by: Wray

Hi Nicola. 72 is high enough to warrant progesterone! All your symptoms point to a severe deficiency too. Progesterone does not come in patches, but the synthetic ones do, usually combined with oestrogen. Please do not use these! I would suggest you use 200mg/day progesterone due to the severity of your symptoms, I don't believe any less will help you. Particularly the heavy bleeding. The cream is the best delivery system, it can be used anywhere, specially beneficial to the face. Also excellent for aches and pains, rub it on them, burns and wounds too. Thanks for the kind words! Take care, Wray

Beginning Progesterone therapy

Hi Wray, What can I say? A HUGE THANKYOU TO YOU AND A TINY POT OF PROGESTERONE CREAM! I took your advice against using the script my GP left for me to collect. Sadly she didn't appear to have as much knowledge as I did!. I've been applying the cream am and pm onto my abdomen. My sleep's improved but what I've really noticed is my change in mood - am back in control of my emotions at the moment, the tearfulness is greatly improved - can't believe it. My temper's no longer a problem and I'm no longer full of rage as I was.

I've told so many peple about the marked difference the cream's made. I can't believe I've suffered so much (my family too) and could have used the cream a couple of years ago. I've tried anti-depressants with little success and awful side effects. I'm working in mental health and will certainly suggest my clients consider natural Progesterone therapy as I have. Am I right to apply the cream into my abdomen or is another area such as the face more effective? How do I measure 200 mgs a day? So far I've just "dabbed" a little on my finger tip.

Thank you so much again - did cry when I saw my own message on screen - good tears!

Beginning Progesterone therapy
by: Wray

Hi Nicola. How wonderful! Progesterone made the world of difference to me, I do hope others listen to you too. So many women write to me about 'mental' health problems, but all they need is a little help from progesterone and the healing amino acids. Dr Dalton wrote in one of her books, of the many women sent from one 'ologist' to another but all they needed was progesterone. The cream can be applied anywhere, it's excellent for burns, minor wounds, bruises etc. and it's wonderful for the face, I use some there am and pm, please see this...

If you are using the Natpro, 6ml of cream will give you 200mg progesterone. But you seem to have responded so well to a dab, that you probably won't need that much. Try slightly more and see how you feel, it's so easy to adjust the dose and judge how you react. Although you might find the heavy bleeding does require the higher amount. Please remember stress drops progesterone levels, so symptoms can come back, just use more to get you over that time. Please have a look at the peri-menopause page too, it explains what's happening to you. Take care, Wray

Progress so far-1st month
by: Nicola-England

I've now had my first period since starting the natural progesterone cream-it was very heavy , flooded for 2nd and 3rd days. Needed to spend 2 days in bed-fortunately it was over the weekend. It was not quite as painful as normal and emotionlly I was so much better. Will take it again for two weeks after I've ovulated this month and see how I am. I understand it takes 3 months to see the full effects of this treatment. It's definitely eased the pain I experience in my right hip (am osteopenic-had a Dexa scan 2 years ago) in both hips but my spine's ok. I am going to continue like this for 3 months and will then increase to daily throughout the month if need be or is it better to increase the dose for 2 weeks?

Progress
by: Nicola-England

I had intended to only use the cream for 2 weeks each month. Since stopping the cream I've been almost back to square one-pmt symptoms mid-month instead! Very very tearful and in considerable pain with my right hip. I've therefore decided to restart the cream again today. I felt great on the cream, back to my old self. I hope to be telling you I'm better in a few days with energy and sleeping better too. I've had a number of hot flushes over the past 24 hours too - as in the past. Will update next week.

PROGRESS 2ND MONTH
by: Nicola england

I've just had 2nd cycle - period a little earlier than expected but not as painful for as long as before. Still flooded but not as bad for a shorter time and was able to go to work - sat in a conference all day in pain but was manageable with analgesia. Have missed a few days - easy to forget to apply the cream and I've noted mood swings returning so am now back using it every night. Don't like having heavy tender breasts but think this will ease when my routine of using the cream is established again. I'm hoping that next month will be another improvement.

PROGRESS 2ND MONTH
by: Wray

Hi Nicola. Thanks for the update! Please use it AM and PM if you can, it drops too low over a 24hr period. And if you have pain next cycle, please rub some cream on your tummy, it's helped many, I see no reason why it shouldn't help you. For the mastalgia (tender breasts), rub the cream directly on them too. I can't forget it now, having used it for so long, I panic if I don't have it with me, even to carrying a tube in my bag! I use it every morning and night in place of face cream, it's very effective, please see this page. Take care, Wray

Progress 3rd month
by: Nicola england

Just had 3 rd period since starting the cream - still adhoc at times but do manage to apply it most evenings or mornings. All my family have commented on my change in mood - even my future son in law's noted how I'm so much calmer and no longer having dreadful mood swings. I've given the web site details to someone else too!. Period much more manageable, still clooing but improving. Now able to cope with work - so my sick times better!.

Will I lose weight?
by: Anonymous

I am a 46 year old woman who experienced a full hysterectomy 2 years ago. I wear a patch for estradiol. The dosage is 0.05. I still have hot flushes at night and have gained over 20 lbs. Will progesterone therapy cause me to gain weight or lose weight? I have asked 2 doctors and both refuse to write a prescription for progesterone. One of them actually agreed to do blood work to show my progesterone levels and when I got the results back it only showed estrogen type levels. No progesterone levels were shown. If this product will help me to lose 10 pounds of the 20 something I have gained, I will order it.

Progress 4th month
by: Nicola england

Periods easier-still don't manage to remember to use cream daily-do apply throughout all of the month-much better in myself. Have gained weight and lost weight only to regain-hormonal changes make it so difficult to lose weight, am still craving sweet /carbs premenstrually. Have definitely noticed a genaral weight gain -hard to put it down to the progesterone cream. Can only deal with one thing at a time and am so relieved to have my life control back.

A few months ago I felt so lost and was basically housebound for a week a month, now I manage to lead a normal life for all but a couple of days a month. I do still experience unpleasant pre-menstrual symptoms in the 2nd half of my cycle but its all so much easier to manage. The cream really has changed improved my quality of life-its great not to be bursting into tears at the drop of a hat!

Will I lose weight?
by: Wray

Oestrogen and only oestrogen stimulates cells to divide and multiply, including fat cells. Oestrogen also causes water retention and insulin resistance, all of which cause weight gain. For more info on IR please see here. For more info on what the oestrogen is doing to you please see here.

Progesterone suppresses oestrogen, it cannot stimulate cells to divide, therefore there is no concern with cancer, in fact it's been used successfully for this. It's thermogenic so speeds metabolism slightly, it's helpful in insulin resistance as it helps to stabilise blood glucose. It's such an excellent diuretic it's now being used via IV transfusion for brain trauma victims, as it reduces the oedema and inflammation that forms after the injury. I suspect you have insulin resistance, you are in peri-menopause when it can start due to dropping progesterone levels, plus you are getting extra oestrogen. Plus you had a hysterectomy, so you are not making any ovarian progesterone to counter the oestrogen your fat cells are making, and the extra you are getting. There's no question, which ever way you look at it, it's the oestrogen causing the weight gain. Farmer's know this fact, which is why they give their livestock oestrogen, to increase their fat content. Pity doctors don't know this! And it doesn't surprise me they didn't check progesterone levels, some are either so against it, or ignorant of it's many benefits.

Will progesterone help you loose weight? it will certainly get rid of the excess water you are carrying, but to loose weight you would have to come off the oestrogen. And to avoid all sweet/starchy foods, ie no grains or anything made from them, no sweet/starchy fruits or root vegetables, no legumes, no sugar in any form. Incidentally hot flushes will go in about 4 days if approximately 400mg of progesterone is used per day. if you do decide to use it, please read these two web pages...

Estrogen dominance
If you decide to come off the patch please see here. Take care, Wray

Progress 4th month

Hi Nicola. This is fascinating for me... thanks so much for the updates! Would it help to remember if you left it next to your toothpaste, but don't mistake it for it!? It won't harm you of course, but progesterone is very bitter. Glad you opted to use it throughout the month. If you could try to use it regularly it might help the weight issue. Each time you stop and start it oestrogen will be activated, it's essential to keep progesterone the dominant hormone. And you are not using enough premenstrually. I asked one woman with similar problems to increase to 200mg/day the few days before her period started. Well she decided to use it for the two weeks before and went up to 2 tsp, which gave her 330mg progesterone. She told me the 'monster' as she called it hadn't returned! Pleased the crying has stopped, that was something I found exhausting and baffling, as there was no reason for it. Take care, Wray
