Trying to determine my imbalance

by Jennifer
(St. Louis, MO)

I am 36 with a 4 and 5 year old and still cycling every 28 days. I took the pill for 15 years and just quit about 5 months ago. I am suspicious I have a hormonal imbalance. I have felt horrible for over 12 years with chronic fatigue, joint pain, constipation (since I can remember), allergies, asthma, headaches, chronic sinusitis, irritability that swiches to rage in a flash, brain fog, depression... the list goes on.

I have improved the symptoms tremendously, through diet, which enabled me to start seeing a cyclical pattern. I start to feel well until day 20 when I get the blues. For the next 8 - 10 days, I am OK with an occasional crabby day. Then about day 3 the back tension and headaches start, the sinuses get painful and the irritability and fatigue set in. I'm on day 11 and still have the pain in my neck and back. I'm tired, irritable and just not motivated. Any idea what the clues suggest?

Trying to determine my imbalance

Hi Jennifer. It does sound suspiciously like a progesterone deficiency, especially as you've been taking the pill for 15 years. The pill stops all ovarian function, so for those 15 years the ovaries were not making any progesterone. I'm relieved you're not taking it any more. You might like to see this web page on the OC's.

Please do the questionnaire in the right margin of this page, it will give you a better idea of whether you need it or not. Take care, Wray
