Stopped working for insomnia after 6 days.

I am 60 years old and have had insomnia for 15 years. I have always suspected it to be hormone related. Recently I decided I wanted to try bio identical progesterone to see if it would help. I sought the help of a Naturopathic doctor who put me on the lowest dose of 50 mg to start. The first night I slept 6 hours which was really wonderful because normally I can only sleep 2 or 3 hours before I wake up and it usually takes about 4 hours to get back to sleep. The 6 hours of sleep continued for almost a week and then suddenly I was back to the same old problem. I tried 100 mg for a few nights but that did nothing. Then I increased the dose to 200 mg which worked but only for 6 nights. Does anyone know what might be going on? I am wondering if I will have to do some type of on/off schedule for the progesterone to work.

Hi there Please read through our page on Menopause, it might help. And the page on Oestrogen Dominance. Are you taking enough salt? Often 1/2tsp salt in some warm water at night helps. Has your cortisol level been checked? High cortisol at night will cause havoc with sleeping. Evening cortisol levels also effect sleep, as there seems to be a rise at that point in insomniacs. Zinc can lower cortisol levels, see here and here. Take care Wray
