Progesterone and back pain

by Wendy
(Capistrano Beach, CA)

I have been on oral compounded progesterone for about 5 years. In the past I have taken 100 mg at night. I have had really bad PMS and sleeping problems lately (I am 45 1/2) and so I decided, after some research, to increase my dose to 200 mg and I am also using some health food store progesterone cream in the AM. Mentally, I feel better but my back is feeling like it does the week before my period, maybe even worse and I am on day 7 or 8 of my cycle. What happens to muscles with higher doses of progesterone? I am in decent shape. I do pilates or walk every day.

I love the mental change but I am concerned about the physical change. I cannot live with this constant back pain/weakness. Do you have any advice?

Thank you.

Progesterone and back pain

Hi Wendy Unfortunately the 'higher' dose is not really giving you much. Oral progesterone is the least effective Delivery system. The cream you've bought probably tells you to use about 20mg progesterone. This is also far too low. All this is doing is causing Oestrogen Dominance. Too low an amount of progesterone stimulates oestrogen, with oestrogen rising again, symptoms do become worse. Oestrogen is an excitatory, inflammatory hormone. Progesterone is an excellent anti-inflammatory, diuretic too, and is now given via IV transfusion to TBI victims. Please open the caps you have, add the contents to a small amount of natural cream or oil, and rub it on your skin. This will give you the full benefit of the progesterone. It should be used a minimum of twice a day, more if symptoms are severe. I advise rubbing the progesterone on any sore or aching area, it's more effective. We do have more info on our page How to use progesterone cream. If you do as I suggest, please re-read the oestrogen dominance page, as increasing progesterone can also cause adverse symptoms to occur. This will pass, particularly if sufficient is used. It's essential to make progesterone the dominant hormone. Take care Wray

I feel your pain

I’ve always had severe back pain whilst on progesterone. Firstly with the merina coil and now it’s come back with oral progesterone and oestrogen gel. Tried the patches and that caused me pain too. I’ve had to choose between pain and exhaustion unfortunately. The pain can be inbearable at times but exhaustion can too.
