The lack of progesterone in women can cause accumulation of abdominal subcutaneous fat (SAT)?

Hi there Thanks for clearing up my confusion. A lack of progesterone does have a bearing on SAT accumulating. Oestrogen is a mitogen, it stimulates cells to proliferate, including fat cells. These also secrete oestrone, so a vicious cycle starts, see here. Testosterone is responsible for VAT (visceral adipose tissue) increasing, see here and here. Progesterone suppresses both hormones, if bound to SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) testosterone becomes inactive, progesterone raises levels of SHBG, see here, so preventing the rise of free testosterone and severe PMS. Oestrogen is also bound to SHBG but to a lesser extent. But progesterone is an aromatase inhibitor, this enzyme converts testosterone to oestrogen. So high levels of progesterone will inhibit aromatase which prevents excess oestrogen being made, see here and here. So supplementing with progesterone does prevent excess oestrogen and testosterone from begin secreted. But it should not be viewed as a weight loss supplement. For general info on progesterone please see our page on How to use progesterone cream. Take care Wray
