Post-Menopause age 69

by June
(Canada)

Hello can anyone help me understand post menopause? I’m inquiring for my mother. Is progesterone still needed at age 69? All I keep reading is how estrogen is needed. But what happens to the progesterone? Thanks.

Yes you do

Hi, yes you do need progesterone at 69+. It has so many protective benefits and is needed to oppose the unwanted effects of oestrogen.

In physiological doses though. Too high a dose can have the opposite effect and can switch off the receptor sites.

Hi June

I am 68 and have been using Natpro Progesterone Cream for over 17 years now. I will never stop using it.

The purpose of progesterone therapy is to make progesterone the dominant hormone at all times. The moment you stop using progesterone, estrogen then becomes the dominant hormone which you definitely do not want. See Estrogen Dominance.

There are well over 100 estrogen mimics in our Environment as it is, why use more? Please read How to use Progesterone Cream and Menopause pages.

Vitamin D3 is vital. If deficiency it reduces the benefits of progesterone and is connected to every single functioning cell in our bodies. Cofactors are very important.

Hi Anonymous

Thank you for you input and encouragement.

I don't however agree with "too high a dose". We all need to listen to our bodies and use progesterone according to our adverse symptoms. Between 100-200mg progesterone cream is needed per day using a good quality organic cream such as Natpro which is a 3% cream.

Appreciate it!

Thanks everyone! This is very insightful. In a way I understand what Anonymous is trying to say. If Estrogen drops drastically after menopause, wouldn't increasing Progesterone too much cause a progesterone dominance, which is something that should also be avoided? Is this a judge by symptoms type of situation? My mother's estrogen tested at <40 pmol/L, which seems a bit low but I'm not sure of the range, since they use the ranges for someone with a menstrual cycle. What happens to her current estrogen levels if she raises progesterone too much? She is losing vitality and is very skinny. She was at 105 lbs but with diet and some gut healing has reached back to 117 lbs. But I would like to see her move with more ease and to gain some meat back on her bones.

Sorry I left out one question. Other than increasing progesterone, would it help to detox dirty used estrogen out of the body? Or is that dangerous to do at 69? Such as helping the liver or using binders to bind estrogen metabolites in the gut so it doesn't circulate. Or would that potentially lower the estrogen levels too much?

Adding progesterone wakes up oestrogen receptors
by: Anonymous

Hi June,

Your mum may well need some oestrogen as well as progesterone.

When someone is very skinny and has no fat reserves oestrogen production would need increasing to a physiological dose.

Progesterone and oestrogen need each other as they sensitise each others receptors in the body.

I’m 66 and use 0,5mg of oestradiol and 20mg of progesterone and the symptoms I had are well controlled. In my case I had a total hysterectomy and oophorectomy at age 31 and was only ever given a synthetic oestrogen (made from horses urine) for 29 years so I had all the symptoms possible.

When I started on bio-identical progesterone I asked for a bio-identical oestrogen gel.

Within a few months my fibrocystic breasts resolved and this was confirmed on a mammogram. I no longer needed an ultrasound to measure the size of the cysts. I know the progesterone is doing its work behind the scene so to speak.

Hi June

I'll answer both your posts here.

The aim of progesterone therapy is to make progesterone the dominant hormone at all times as this website states.  As mentioned, there are well over 100 estrogen mimics in our environment as it is, why take more?  You have given your mom's estrogen result but not her progesterone result. This is needed to work out her correct ratio between the two hormones.  Please read the Hormone Testing page for all the correct ranges.  When progesterone becomes the dominance hormone it helps to 'squash' those estrogen dominance symptoms which is the aim.

Many women add calcium d-glucarate to help with detoxing estrogen with great success.  However, I would suggest that you start the correct use of progesterone to see how she gets on, she may not need anything else.  Liver cleanses are always recommended as well as eating fermented foods. They are the best probiotics available, better than any over the counter ones and help to deal with Inflammation which we all suffer from.  If the gut is not healthy, neither will you be.

Perhaps take her to a dietitian or a Naturopath if you are concerned about her weight.

I appreciate the replies! So very helpful and I will pass this information to my mother. But in general is the <40 pmol/L considered low estrogen? What is the ideal level for someone post menopause? what is the ideal progesterone ratio? Also is there a method for a liver cleanse that is recommended?

Sorry wanted to add one more piece of information I left out. My mother is skinny but she also has a bit of a belly at the front. No love handles. Nothing too protruding but it is the largest part of her.

You can find all the correct hormone tests on the Hormone Testing page already given to you. The progesterone:estrogen ratio should always be around 600:1. You can't work that out without a progesterone result.

There are many liver cleanses on the internet but I suggest that you take your mother to a Naturopath/Dietitian . They will be able to advise a good cleanse for her. You can also discuss her weight with them.

Best wishes.

Many thanks. I wish the doctor would give her a progesterone test. I think he deems it pointless as she is post menopausal. I'll try to be more assertive in asking for it. I hope you don't mind me asking here as I'm sure you would be very knowledgeable as to what affects progesterone, but do you know if Chamomile tea is estrogenic? I'm always confused when it comes to herbs and teas. Since some can be estrogenic.

Chamomile tea

Hi, I’ve just seen this:-

It seems you’d have to drink a bucket load of this tea and possibly more to affect oestrogen levels in the body.

Hi Anonymous

Thank you for your kind words. Please don't get me started on doctors testing progesterone. They know it is an important hormone, if not, the most important hormone. Yet they choose to ignore testing unless you ask for it. Very few doctors test for it. How can one work out a ratio with only an estrogen test?? Tests can always be done online, see Birmingham Hospital and ZRT Labs.

Many teas are estrogenic. Chamomile could be one of them, see here, here and here. Personally, I drink it as it has other amazing benefits.
