Have a period every 10 days

by LittleA
(USA )

I’m 42 years old and I think I’m in peri menopause because when I turned 40 I started having a few irregular periods which one was 18 days long! I was so worried that I went to see a gynecologist and they did a bunch of tests and sent me over for an ultrasound and everything came back fine. She told me I was not pre menopause I was still quite fertile. Of course she offered the pill or iud to stabilize it. I declined for the time being. Well the following year I had the worst period of my life it lasted 25 days which a couple of days of changing pads/ tampons every hour I really thought I was going to die! I was really considering the pill then because I didn’t know what else to do and I went to the doctor again but it was a different one and she said it’s a natural part of life now and it could last 10 years of irregular bad periods and told me my only option is the pill or IUD. I have researched both and just didn’t feel they were right. But with my daughter’s help researched vitamins and other ways to fix my hormones. I still had irregular periods more often and I was starting to get real depressed and angry I read about Progesterone cream and decided I would try it next because everything I was trying still didn’t help. I did the suggested dosage the first month and had my first regular period in a very long time. That was 3 months ago and since then I had a period every 2 weeks and then 10 days. Since April of 22 I have had 4 periods! I stumbled on this sight when I was researching the cream thinking I should stop using it too ,iand after reading a lot on the sight and found out maybe I need to increase my dosage. So I have been using 100 milligrams a day starting 5/16/2022 and so far I haven’t had a period so I’m very grateful that I found this sight and I hope that I can get more regulated. I keep reading everything here and you have said it shouldn’t stop my period. It’s hard because when you have frequent periods you want it to go away and then when it doesn’t come you worry to. In the last few years I have skipped periods as well. my longest time in between was 50 days that was when I had the 25 day period. The doctors keep claiming that anything natural won’t help so I really hope they are wrong, I’m very healthy and like everyone here just don’t think peri menopause or pre menopause should have to be like this. If you think I should be doing anything else please don’t hesitate to let me know!

Have a period every 10 days
by: Joy

Hi LilleA

I can confirm that you are most definitely in Peri-Menopause (PM) which starts are around 35 when progesterone levels drop sharply and estrogen levels remain the same causing some very unpleasant symptoms. It surprises me that your doctor didn't know this. PM is a time when the monthly cycle can become extremely erratic with heavy bleeding and at times clotting. The correct use of progesterone helps tremendously.

I am so pleased that you refused Contraceptives. They all have a potential to cause harm. The IUD most probably would have been the Mirena, the worst contraceptive and to my mind should be removed from the market. The side effects are simply not worth it.

There are many progesterone creams available, choosing the correct one is important. A good organic progesterone cream such as Natpro is a good option. It is a 3% cream and was formulated 30 years ago. If not using Natpro, please adjust the cream that you are using so that it equates to Natpro. It should be used no less than twice a day, half the amount in the morning and the other half at night. Usually between 100-200mg per day is needed, more may be needed, it is all dependent on symptoms. Please read the How to use Progesterone Cream and Estrogen Dominance pages.

Progesterone therapy does disrupt things when first used but the body soon adjusts. It is recommended that the cream be used every day once PM starts. It becomes extremely difficult to use while following a cycle that is erratic as yours is.

Doctors prefer prescribing drugs for obvious reasons. I have been using Natpro since I was 47, I am almost 67 and I will never stop using it. If only doctors would take the time to actually help their patients and study progesterone, life would be so much easier for women! A missed period for 12 months puts a women into Menopause. Do not let your doctors tell you otherwise.

Very important is Vitamin D3. Do you know what your level is? It must be optimal at all times. A deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone and is connected to every single functioning cell in our bodies. The cofactors are equally important.

Advice needed
by: Anonymous

Hello, my story is much like this. I was told to take 5-7 days off regardless of my irregular cycle to keep receptor sites open. I would rather take it daily so i don't have to calculate every month when to stop. Also, can the only face, inner arms, neck and chest be used? I was told nothing below abdomen due to more fatty tissue and harder to absorb. Advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I apologize, I forgot to add 1 more thing. If I apply the creme every day, will that keep me from having a period? I worry if my uterus needs to shed and won't build. I thought this was another reason to take that week off so a period can come.
I'm a little confused.

Hi there

I'll answer both your posts here.

Sadly there are many Progesterone Misconceptions. Please make sure that you are getting your information from a reliable source and read the research and study papers. The aim of progesterone therapy is to balance the hormones. If the monthly cycle is irregular when does one take a break exactly? Use progesterone every day until your monthly cycle returns to normal, then use progesterone by following a regular monthly cycle i.e. your luteal page especially if you are TTC. Please read the links given on this thread below on how to use progesterone cream etc.

Again another misconception. Progesterone cream can be used on ANY part of the body even hair follicles absorb progesterone. see here. It is best when inserted in the vagina at night. The only place that would cause an issue would be in the eyes due to the oil content. Nothing below the abdomen??? Really? When using progesterone it enters the blood stream all over the body. How can applying it to upper part of the body prevent it from entering fat cells?? Progesterone does not store in fatty tissue, estrogen does. Many websites state that the receptors become insensitive, therefore a break is essential. Nonsense, this now gives estrogen a chance to become the dominant hormone again. The build-up of progesterone in fatty tissue would imply that the receptors would become insensitive. Only take a break if trying to conceive and if one has a healthy regular cycle, most do not. There do not appear to be any studies showing it builds up in fatty tissue, but there is a paper stating that it doesn't.

"Despite the low serum progesterone levels achieved with the creams, salivary progesterone levels are very high, indicating that progesterone levels in serum do not necessarily reflect those in tissues".

You do not state your age but if in Peri-Menopause the cream should be used every day with no breaks going forward as explained on the thread below. One function of progesterone therapy is to clear out the lining of the uterus which is a build-up of excess estrogen. Doctors like to suggest a D and C for this, which is most unnecessary and invasive. Why? Progesterone does the same thing with no side effects. Once the body has adjusted to progesterone and has become the dominant hormone, things all fall into place.

I encourage you to use the search bar on this website and read the research/study papers given.

Take care.

Thank you!

Thank you so so much for this ! I am 43 and have had regular cycles my entire life. They started to become erratic around 37. I would have 2 periods a month and know they are coming late. I currently do 40 mg a day on creme. 20 in morning and 20 at night. After reading your blogs I see I may need more. I am feeling quite good I have to say. Maybe a little fatigued at times but hot flashes are gone. Now that I know that progesterone thins the lining that makes me feel much better.
Would you advise me to increase my dose to 100? I use a measuring spoon. How much would I need in morning and night to equal 100?
I will purchase this on your website because I would have to use alot of creme with what Dr. Lee suggests. Emerita only has 20 per quarter tsp. Since i feel good on my dose currently, will this be enough for protection? Will a higher dose make me retain water and feel tired? I have lost 10 after starting the creme. So many questions i apologize Thank you!

Should I be worried
by: LittleA

I did post a another comment on Sunday but haven’t seen it posted. So hopefully this one gets posted. Just wanted to say thank you to all that has commented here and hope that this can help other people. So I finished a 5 day period 23 days ago and haven’t had one since then. Which is nice to have a break from som many in the past few months but am nervous I won’t start one soon. I’m still doing 100 milligrams a day. Does it take awhile to adjust? I’m doing a lot of natural vitamins and currently take one 250 mcg vitamin d a day. I don’t feel I will get the help I need from a doctor because they weren’t very supportive of any of the natural things I mentioned I was doing. Again I am very grateful to have found this site and appreciate your thoughts.

Should I be worried
by: Joy

Hi LittleA

Where did you post your comment as nothing has come through.

There is nothing to be nervous about and no need to be concerned.  I trust that you have read all the links given to you, all the information is there.  It can take 2-6 months before the body adjusts to progesterone therapy if used correctly, longer if symptoms are severe.   If 100mg is not helping you then increase to 200mg per day.  Once your cycle returns to normal then use the during your luteal phase if you are TTC. All explained on the How to use progesterone Cream page.  A reminder that as you are in Peri-Menopause you will need to use the cream every day as your cycle will be erratic.

Nothing less than 5000iu's per day of vitamin D3 is required, more if you are deficient.  Please take the cofactors mentioned on the page.

I encourage you to use the search bar provided, you will find so much information by searching.

Take care.

Hot Flashes Return
by: Joy

Your post sounds familiar.  Did you post something on my Facebook page?  You are in Peri-Menopause (PM).  Please read the page on it given below.  The monthly cycle usually becomes erratic at this time.

Hot flushes do not respond to anything less than 400mg per day so I am not surprised that they have returned using the amount that you are using.  I do not think the cream that you are using has the correct concentration.  Advice given is based on Natpro which is a 3% cream.  100mg will definitely not help you while you are dealing with them.

Once your HF's are under control slowly reduce to 200mg, most women benefit from 200mg when going through PM. You will have to experiment with the amount used to see what suits you, but please do not use less than 100mg. All studies show that anything less causes issues.  Use half the amount in the morning and the other half at night.  I always suggest inserting the night time dose in the vagina at night as it is the best place to absorb the progesterone.  I am not sure what the cream that you are using contains, make sure that it doesn't contain anything that may irritate the vagina.

Water retention is an estrogen dominance symptom, progesterone if used correctly helps with this as it is a diuretic.  You could also be suffering from Insulin Resistance and have you had your thyroid tested?  Are you taking iodine drops?  If not, you should be. Please make sure that your vitamin D3 level is optimal as explained in the post below.

On the how to use progesterone cream page is a chart indicating how long a dispenser will last you.

Iodine link request
by: Anonymous

Thank you so kindly! I use emerita creme. I dint mind applying the amount ypu suggest but that's ALOT of creme. 2 1/4 tsp. I'm waiting until natpro is back in stock. I tried to order and waiting for a email for availability. How would you suggest I apply that amount without running out of places and fir it to absorb correctly. I want to get a jump start on it. I applied tonight before work ( I work mids) 2 1/4 tsp application to equal 200mg. I had to apply to front and back of neck, face, inner thighs and buttocks. I don't even know what areas of the body to use tonight since I used them all today.
Also, can you explain what you mean by vaginal application? Is this applied with the product on the finger and how far to go into the vagina? Thank you so much

?Also, yes I get routine blood work every year and my thyroid, T3 and T4 is always in normal range. I take 5,000 vit d3 along with 1 dim and 1 calcium glucarate per your suggestion

Weird question but, do you suggest my husband to also take dim daily and would he benefit? He also dies progesterone creme for protection. He's 42. It's a small dose

Iodine link request
by: Joy

The cream can be applied ALL over the body so it is not difficult applying the cream. Not only on the places that you are applying. Others manage when using much more cream. Space the cream out during the day if that suits you better. Natpro can be inserted in the vagina at night, I do this every night and just use my finger, no application needed.

You will have to do your own research regarding iodine drops, but the preferred one is Lugol's. What exactly is normal when it comes to test results? Please make sure that your tests are as stated on the Hormone Testing page. I trust that you are taking the cofactors mentioned mentioned when taking D3. Why are you taking DIM and CdG? There should be no need for both.

If your husband is suffering badly with estrogen dominance then yes he should also take CdG. I find that people respond better to it compared to DIM but everyone is different. If it works for you then great. I just see no reason to take both.

Thank you. How far do I go into the vagina for this? It's safe to go this route everyday without changing sites to keep receptors open?

I thought you had to take both due to both of them helping each other out. Should I drop the Dim? I take 1 500mg of the calcium. Please let me know if this is usually enough.

I'll be ordering Natpro when it becomes available. I definitely need a higher dose.

Cream
by: Little A

I have posted another comment again but it looks like it wasn’t posted either. Thank you Joy for your helpful information. I would love to get some Natpro cream but it keeps saying out of stock. When do you think it will be back? Or should I look for it somewhere else? Going on 34 days since my last period do I need to up my dosage?

Thank you

Cream

Hi Little A

I don't understand why you can't see your posts.  Where exactly are you posting them?   Are you using Anonymous? It's rather difficult when that is used as I have no idea who I am replying to.  Natpro is currently out of stock which is most annoying.  I understand from admin that it should be back in stock later this week, early next week.  Please read the information already given to you on this thread about how to use the cream .

Not far. You will need to use your discretion with this. As mentioned, there should be no need for DIM and CdG. It's unnecessary as far as I am concerned. However, if others have advised you differently and it works for you then go for it. It's not what I would recommend though.

It sounds to me as though you may be getting confused which quite easily happens when jumping from one site to another. So many conflicting stories.

Cream
by: Little A

Hi Joy, the 2 comments I thought I posted had my same name but different titles. I post it where it says to comment under my story. I have read all the links several times but it seems vague about what severe symptoms are to up dosage of cream. I don’t have hot flashes ( yet, anyway) every time I think I may start my period and I use my cream it seems to stop it. I’m still very new to leaning about peri menopause and cream. I have learned a lot from you and this site so I will keep looking for information. I will keep watching for the cream to come back.

Thank you again!

Too high?
by: Anonymous

I have know Started 400 mg a day for 2 days. Yesterday was a weird one. I felt unbalanced in such a way as low blood pressure. That's the best way I can explain it. I took my BP and was normal though. Is this an indication that it's too high of a dose? I went from 100 to 400 overnight.

Too High??
by: Joy

Why did you jump from 100 to 400mg? You may not have needed that much unless you are suffering from Hot Flushes. You can read up on that on this thread. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the 400mg amount but why if not needed? What you are feeling is quite normal. Your body must now adjust to the higher amount. Whether one decreases or increases the amount used, the body will always need time to adjust.

Hot flashes
by: Anonymous

Yes ma'am. The hot flushes is the reason I increased. I felt really good with 40 a day. I've missed my period for 2 months now and flashes have returned. Mostly at night waking up sweating. A few through the day but night is the most. Im 42 years of age. Yesterday was quite strange after 2 days on 400mg. Again. I felt like it was low blood pressure with a headache even though my BP was normal. I'm slim weight as well.

Period finally came
by: LittleA

Well after 39 days since my last period i finally got my period. It started with just spotting for 3 days and then went into regular for four days. I did 100 milligrams of cream all the way through it. So I have real hope for the first time in a very long while that I will get back to normal (as much as I can anyway.) Also I was just able to order some natpro cream, so will see how I like that compared to the one I’m on now. I hope my story will help others. I want to thank all, that are a part of this website and have responded to me. (Joy and Wray)!

Hi LittleA

Oh that is wonderful news and thank you for your kind words . It's how progesterone, if used correctly works. You may need to increase a little but see how you get on.

Please keep us posted and remember to go back to the links given to you if you get confused.
