Extremely high progesterone levels

by Sharon
(Fayetteville, AR)

I just had a saliva test which resulted in my progesterone levels being 9,831 and normal for my age should be 2-3000. My Estrodiol is in range, but of course ratios out of range due to the high progesterone.

I do use bio-identical hormone cream from Women's International and it has both progesterone and pregnonalone in it. My pg/e2 is 1294 and should be 1-500. I thought for sure my adrenals were wiped out since I have been feeling really poorly with little sleep and tired most of the time. I also have been feeling achy and my vision is affected. I had a hysterectomy over 2 months ago due to carcinoma in situ/cervix and now I almost wonder if the progesterone didn't cause it since hpv tests were all negative. I am healthy with normal labs except for the 2 mentioned above.

I am really concerned about my health since I've battled adrenal exhaustion before, as well. I wonder about environmental toxins and if previous exposure could cause the hormonal imbalances I am experiencing. I eat so pure and have for years and am not over-weight. I look like a picture of health, so drs never take me seriously, but I don't feel like it. Your reply is welcome and appreciated. The pharmacist did not know what to make of the test.

Extremely high progesterone levels
by: Wray

Hi Sharon Saliva results can be high, in fact they can go as high as 100,000. Please see our page on this here. We've found from saliva tests we run that the ratio of pg:E2 should be 600:1 and over to feel well. You have just had a hyst, which throws the body into hormonal turmoil. It can take months to settle down. There's no evidence that progesterone causes cancer, the reverse in fact. It's been used successfully for many, see our page on Cancer and progesterone. I've found supplemental progesterone very helpful for adrenal exhaustion. The adrenals first make progesterone before converting it into cortisol, one of the stress hormones. If stressed they rob other sources, notably ovarian progesterone. This is turn upsets the reproductive cycle, in fact stress can stop ovulation, which of course stops ovarian progesterone production. Progesterone is excellent for sleep too, see here. You don't mention how much progesterone you were using, but if the normal recommended 20-40mg/day this is probably why you are not sleeping well and are tired. The hyst would only make things worse. I recommend 100-200mg/day, dependant on symptoms. We do have more info on our Peri-menopause and Menopause pages. And please read our page on Oestrogen Dominance too. Take care Wray

My ratio is way high too
by: Colleen

I had been using 200mg cream for a few months and prior to that dose., 100mg, and have mostly been on both progesterone and estrogen for the last five years. When I took this saliva test I had stopped all hormones for five weeks. My ratio came back 1251-1. Showing estrogen low, but in range. The saliva now show progesterone dominance. I have horrible muscle spasms that I thought progesterone would help, but maybe I'm now estrogen deficient. I also had stage two adrenal dysfunction. If it's true that progesterone helps adrenals, and my saliva indicates too high ratio, how is that a valid theory regarding progesterone and adrenals. Do I need to stop progesterone for a bit and use Estriol only. My doctor seems to think so.
