Biodentical Progesterone

Not sure if you know about it but there is Biodentical Progesterone which is also called Micronized Prometrium and it does have some side effects but not anything substantial. I have estrogen dominance and got prescribed some of this, 100 mg supposedly 1x a day. What I want to know is if I should be taking biodentical estrogen along with the Prometrium to balance out my hormones or not?

I had a blood test done and my progesterone level is 0.5 (almost gone) and high level of globulin which clearly indicates estrogen dominance and which in turn has created my estrogen dominance and caused my thyroid problem (hashimotos thyroiditis) and I have IBS C and low stomach acid and candida yeast overgrowth and parasites.

I am only 56 but I feel like I am falling apart and no doctor I have been to yet wants to help me get well. The last quack I saw said all of my symptoms are in my head. Right. Even my thyroid medication (Armour Thyroid 1/4 grain) doesn't want to work right. It makes me look scary wired and get all bitchy. lol. Blood tests also said I was Post Menopausal. I am not Post, I am currently going thru it because I am still having Hot flashes. Not a lot but when I do have them my face turns beet red and I get sweaty hot.

What the hell is wrong with me? HELP.

Hi Pam

The word 'micronized' is one of those irritating phrases that is used to impress people, but means nothing. It just means it's been ground very small. I don't believe that you are using enough progesterone, usually between 100-200mg is needed. If the 100mg is not helping you, I recommend that you use more, try 200mg. You will have to experiment with the amount used to see what suits you. Progesterone cream should be used no less than twice a day, so split the amount used, use half in the morning and the other half at night.

I don't believe that any women needs to use any estrogen. There are well over 100 mimics in our environment as it is, why use more? The aim of progesterone therapy is to make progesterone the dominant hormone, by using extra estrogen would prevent progesterone from becoming dominant. Do you have your estrogen result? This is needed to work out your ratio.

IBS is often caused by mixing foods, i.e. eating carbohydrates such as rice, potatoes and bread, with protein. If you do this, please try to avoid it to see if this is your problem. Excess estrogen also exacerbates candida.

A missed period for 12 months puts one in Peri-Menopause which can be a terrible time for most women. The correct use of progesterone will help you and prepare you for Menopause. Hot flushes usually responds to 400-500mg progesterone for 4 - 6 days or until they clear. Once they have cleared you can slowly start to reduce the amount of progesterone use to a level that suits you, but never less than 100mg.

Do you know what your Vitamin D3 level is? as a deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone, it also affects the thyroid. Optimal range is between 70-100ng/mL.

Bio identical progesterone

I’m only thirty, but let me tell you, I can relate. After I had my daughter four years ago I experienced terrible fatigue, insomnia, anger, heavy periods and HOT FLASHES! I too had my hormones tested and was told at the ripe old age of 26, that my progesterone which was 0.3 was post menopausal. Obviously I’m not post menopausal. I had terrible estrogen dominance which I’m pretty sure contributed to my POTS issues/cfs.

If you haven’t already, I would get your estrogen tested. That is a MUST. You cannot figure out your ratio without progesterone and estrogen levels. If you search this site you will find many women who have had the same problems as you.

I have been on 200 mg of prog. cream (spread throughout the day) and a 200 mg pill of prometrium at night, which has gotten rid of my insomnia. I also take 2000 mg of calcium D Glucarate a day which I think has really helped the hot flashes. Mind you, this has taken me four years to figure out. Definitely no quick fix. And I have cut out all refined sugar, gluten and dairy. I eat a plant based vegan diet now. I don’t think you can completely heal while still eating terrible food.

Good luck. It is a lot of information to take in. You can do it, just keep reading and educating yourself.

Progesterone

Your symptoms are really common, so please don’t feel anxious or feel you’re alone. If you are estrogen dominant, you don’t need extra estrogen. The progesterone should be the dominant hormone. I am also apparently post meno. I have acne and I feel terrible. I never even had acne as a teenager. If I were you, I’d ask your doc to do a full hormone panel blood test. Join a very good menopause Facebook group and post your results on there. You will get some great advice and may even receive some recommendations as to what doctor to see.
