anorexia

What would you suggest for a child who is rebounding from anorexia? My sweet girl has not had her period as of yet ( she is 14 ), but my concern is should she begin taking progesterone now while still on Celexa and Zyprexa for severe depression and OCD behaviors/anxiety. Both of these medications have helped, although I still do not like the thought of her taking them.

I currently have her taking a vitamin d supplement daily ( 5000 iu ) along with Omega 3 oils. When is the right time to begin progesterone, if at all? Dealing with the disease is tricky because she does need to be encouraged to eat anything. We currently are using lime oil and ylang ylang oil which she greatly loves due to their aroma.

One last question. Does anyone out there know how well progesterone serum works? My other sweet girl (17) was diagnosed with endometriosis. She was placed on Balziva, a birth control, but we are trying desperately to remove her from all synthetic hormones. We took her off and have been using a plant based serum, detox program for her liver, and vit. d, omega 3 pills, primrose softgels, and theives oil. She does alright with pain unless she tries to run, and she's a runner. Pimples have also surfaced, sweating heavily under her arms, difficulty sleeping, along with moderate hair growth on her arms and slightly on her face. A perscription for YAZ birth control to help was called in yesterday, but we did NOT fill it.Any suggestions would be a great blessing to both girls. Thank you! MK

Hi there Please don't be concerned about your daughter not menstruating yet. All girls now start far too early, it should only start when we're 17, as it used to, see our page on Menstruation for more info. I do agree with you about the drugs, not the best option. There are nutrients which help Anxiety, far safer too. It could be this is all she needs. For instance inositol cures OCD, amounts up to 18g/day have been given with no ill affect, see here, here, here and here. Excess copper causes depression, anxiety and psychosis, has anyone checked her copper levels? This is the best site on mental health problems and correcting them naturally, see Alternative Mental Health. They also have a page with all of Walsh's papers on nutritional deficiencies or overloads. Please click on 'copper' in the index. The Analytical Research Labs have an excellent page on copper toxicity too. Excess oestrogen causes an increase in copper, plus it depresses zinc. High copper also suppresses zinc. Anorexics are low in zinc, see here. At the beginning of puberty oestrogen secretion begins. But it's not until menses start ±2 years later, that ovulation occurs and with it the secretion of progesterone. So high oestrogen is often a cause of all our puberty ills, including anorexia, which could also be due to Inflammation, see here. Oestrogen is an excitatory, inflammatory hormone. And it increases free radicals, see here. Your daughter could benefit from a high dose anti-inflammatory complex. Continued below

anorexia Part 2

Hi there Of greatest importance is vitamin D, please have a test done, see here. Oestrogen also stimulates glutamate, our most excitatory neurotransmitter, see here. Oestrogen also destroys beta-endorphin neurons in the brain, these produce endorphins which promote a feeling of well being and relaxation. I had depression during puberty too, I do wonder how any woman survives it! Progesterone protects against glutamate toxicity, it also increases BDNF (brain-derived neuroptrophic factor) in itself protective, see here and here. If glutamate is too high, it allows calcium, an excitatory mineral, to enter the cells. This only makes matters worse. Progesterone also protects against calcium induced excitotoxicity, see here. It's possible your daughter is deficient in vitamin D, but only a test will tell this, please have one done for both daughters. A lack of vitamin D reduces the benefits of progesterone, plus it can cause insomnia, see here and here. I'm relieved you turned down the YAZ script. Endometriosis is caused by oxidative stress, high dose antioxidants are needed, progesterone too. Although if severe pain is experienced about 500mg/day is needed. Your 14 yr old daughter can start using progesterone, mine did when she was 14, she still uses it and is now 32. As she has no cycle she can use it daily, which is how I got my daughter to use it too. Her cycle didn't settle down to approx once a month until she was 18, when she began following her cycle. I suggest she starts with 200mg/day. There's more info on our page How to use progesterone cream. Continued below

anorexia Part 3

Hi there Please get them to avoid all sweet, starchy foods and drinks, all of them. It might be an idea for them to follow the Ketogenic Diet. It reduces glucose levels to the barest minimum, and the body uses ketones for energy. It's a very high fat, moderate to low protein and very low carb diet. Only the good fats should be used, i.e. MCT oil, coconut oil, butter, olive oil or macadamia oil. The first three are saturated fats, the other two mono-unsaturated fats. The best is the MCT oil, an extract from coconut oil. The body converts the fatty acid into ketones, in fact the brain does better on these than glucose. MCT oil forms ketones more efficiently than the other oils. The diet varies from a 4:1 ratio of fat to protein/carb down to a 1:1 ratio which is the easier to follow. It's also essential to eat enough protein. This is based on 0.9g to 1.0g of protein per kg per day of lean muscle mass. Contrary to what is generally believed a lack of protein leads to bone loss. There's nothing more damaging to our body than excess sugars in any form, it causes glycation. This occurs when a sugar molecule binds to a protein or lipid molecule without the control of an enzyme. This impairs the function of the molecule, leading to advanced glycation endproducts or AGEs, see here. This results in oxidative stress, see here. Which in turn leads to inflammation, see here. Resulting in many of our inflammatory diseases, which are the end result of long term oxidative stress. Please encourage them to follow the keto diet. See 'Update on using Progesterone Creme and Weight Loss with Low Carb diet' here. This might encourage them. Don't be concerned your daughter will fall back into anorexia, this won't happen. They could both experience Oestrogen Dominance, please get them to read this page about it. Let me know how you get on. Take care Wray
