Wild yam progesterone: weight gain/breast pain

by Starry
(Jersey State)

I have low progesterone and just started taking pharmaceutical progesterone from wild yams.
It's supposed to be taken during days 15-25 of my cycle. I started a week ago and experiencing breast swelling and tenderness and puffiness/weight gain.

Has anyone pushed through these symptoms? Does it get a little better?

Hi Starry

Please make sure that the progesterone that you are using has been synthesized correctly and that it is progesterone Ph. Eur. USP. JP. If not, then it is not natural progesterone. Many people do not take this in account.

You do not state how much you are using, this is extremely important. Once the correct cream has been chosen, I always suggest that when you first start with progesterone to use it every day until the body adjusts and the normal monthly cycle returns. Once this happens, the cream can be used by following your month cycle (luteal phase) It should be used no less than twice a day, half in the morning and the other half at night, between 100-200mg per day is needed, more if symptoms are severe. The cream should only be used from ovulation (Luteal Phase) for the last 14 days of the cycle. The How to use Progesterone cream explains the correct use of progesterone.

Breast swelling etc that you are experiencing is due to not enough being used in the beginning and Estrogen Dominance. These symptoms will clear once progesterone becomes dominant which can take 2-6 months, possibly longer. Tender breasts could mean that you are lacking in iodine, selenium and tyrosine and possible thyroid problems. Have these been tested? Progesterone is an excellent anti-inflammatory, try rubbing the cream on your breasts, it should help a little.

Vitamin D3 is important, please make sure that your level is optimal. A deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone and is connected to every single functioning cell in our bodies. Cofactors are important too.

Hi Joy,

Thanks so much for your reply. Those were really helpful comments.
The protocol was to be done on days 15-25 of my cycle. 25 mg were taken at first, working my way up to 100. This was also to be taken at bedtime.

It's in capsule form from a compounding pharmacy and is supposed to be the natural form. That's as far as I know.

I do supplement with selenium and vitamin D and recently had my thyroid checked without a noticeable problem.

I wonder if I should start with a higher dose to get the estrogen balance.
