Using progesterone cream throughout the cycle

by Priya kannan
(Singapore)

I have hormonal cystic acne and I have normal period cycle 28 -30days. I am highly androgenic. Tried many topical prescribed at my Aesthtic clinic. Nothing worked out.

Started zinc picolonate 30mg/ day & NPC 40 mg/ day about 1 week ago. My acne is much better with 1 or 2 break outs.

My question is if I stop NPC on day 26 will I get break outs? Can I continue without stopping so that acne doesnt come back? Will I get my periods if I use continuously?

Hi Priya

Progesterone therapy does take time to work, between 2-6 months before positive results are felt. You can use the cream every day but you are not using enough cream, between 100-200mg is needed. It may disrupt your cycle but once your body adjusts and the acne improves then use the cream by following your cycle during your luteal phase. Luteal phase starts from ovulation until bleeding. It is always, in all women, 12-14 days long. Progesterone is used during this luteal phase. The How to use Progesterone Cream page explains in more detail. Excess sugar and high testosterone also cause acne.

Vitamin D3 is also very important as a deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone. Optimal level is between 70-100ng/mL and nothing less than 5,000iu's is needed per day. Co-factors are needed when taking D3, magnesium and vitamin K2 with no soy are the important ones.
