Confused about blood test results

by Vera
(BC)

Hello,
I have recently had blood tests done for estradiol and progesterone on day 5 of my cycle on April 16. i am definitely in perimenopause the last few years with very irregular cycles all over the place and of different lengths. I was taking some oral progesterone plus a bit of cream but stopped it all mid March. I started the cream and oral again 3 days before this recent bloodwork, totaling over 100mg actually absorbed. I am confused as to my blood test results and am hoping someone on here can help. My estradiol is at 104 pmol/L and my progesterone at 246.1 nmol/L. Can someone give me the ratio of progesterone to estradiol that these results mean? I am confused!

Confused about blood test results

Hi Vera

You haven't given your age, but it sounds like you are in Peri-Menopause as you have all the symptoms.

Any kind oral progesterone is not the best Delivery Method as around 96% gets destroyed by the gut and liver, meaning that you would be getting very little progesterone, although your tests reveal otherwise. Between 100-200mg per day is needed using a good organic progesterone cream, such as Natpro, which was formulated over 30 years ago and is a 3% cream. Please read the How to Use Progesterone Cream and Estrogen Dominance pages.

You seem to have a high progesterone level. The ratio should be 600:1, yours is 2,366:1. Are you sure these results are correct, and what cream are you using? Please read the Hormone Testing page. I must just add that there is nothing wrong with a high P level, many women have high levels. The main thing is, how are you feeling? This could also happen if you are using a higher percentage progesterone cream.

high progesterone ratio
by: Vera

Hi,
I am actually wondering if they made a mistake in the bloodwork. I have only been on progesterone for 3 days prior to the bloodwork being done. One of the health care providers i deal with actually thinks it might be a mistake. I feel fine in all ways except have insomnia and irregular cycles, both from hormone imbalances. I am 51. I am getting blood work done again next week to double check these results. Thanks for your input, appreciate it!

high progesterone ratio
by: Vera

Hello,
I have had more blood work and my results a week after my first results is now 105.4 nmol/L progesterone and 1466 pmol/L estrogen. And I feel terrible, my insomnia is extremely horrible. I actually slept well during the first blood test, when Joy said my progesterone/estrogen ratio was 2366:1. This was also during my period, when I believe my estrogen levels would be lower? I had only been on progesterone (200-300mg orally, 80mg topically)for 3 days before the first blood work, still not sure why the progesterone went so high to 246.1 nmol/L. I have now been on progesterone for over 2 weeks, making sure I get at least 200mg topically per day. I am still sleeping horribly, my symptoms are severe! And as shown by my blood work, my estrogen shot up really high about a week and half into progesterone therapy. Should I go all in and increase my topical progesterone to 300 or 400mg for a while? Maybe my dose was too low for me at 200mg and ended up stimulating my estrogen? Any input would be appreciated!!

increase..

I'm glad to read an update. I honestly didn't feel better till I incorporated high doses both orally and topically. Personally I don't think I absorb much since I have thyroid issues and find myself with a cold constitution. Could explain why I don't absorb topical form very easily. But adding an oral oil really helped. So maybe that might be helpful to you whilst maintaining the topical use.
