Supplements for Anxiety

Hi Wray, I'm planning to take tryptophan, GABA, B6 and Taurine for anxiety while I'm using progesterone and as the anxiety symptoms have worsened. The GABA only comes in 500 mg - should I split that in half to start? You recommended that these be taken with 25 mg of vitamin B6. Can I take them all together (at night since the tryptophan should be taken at night) with one tablet of 25 mg B6 or do they each need 25 mg of B6?

I tried increasing my dose to 1 tsp at once and the anxiety was so strong after that. I find I can only increase by 1/2 tsp at a time. I'm currently at 1 1/2 tsp spread out 3 times in the day. The anxiety is still bad. How long should I wait to increase it by another 1/2 tsp? I'm just waiting it out to see if it improves before I have to increase it.

I'm also curious about why and how you increased your dose to 170 mg a day of progesterone after you were on 20-40 mg, which resolved your symptoms after 6 months. Wouldn't it have been okay to stay on 20-40 mg at that point since you were symptom free? Or did you find that you needed more as you got older? Thanks for everything.

Supplements for Anxiety

Hi Bonnie Don't take the other aminos with the tryp, they will shunt it to one side so it doesn't work as well as it could. And there's no need to take more than one dose of B6 per day. Pity you find it too difficult to increase the progesterone quickly, but go at your own pace. It's so difficult to tell you how long to wait. If you find the anxiety doesn't improve on the 1 1/2 tsp after a week or two, you could increase the amount again. But don't forget it might not be more progesterone that you need, but the aminos to help your neurotransmitters. They are evidently too low. Although progesterone does help raise them, the best way is to supply the amino precursors. Please don't forget the vitamin D, have you had a test done yet? It's so important for anxiety and depression. And please take at least 5000iu's per day. Levels are low in Canada, see here, here, here and here. It's a curious thing and something I've never thought about, but I have no idea when or why I increased my progesterone! All I know is that I use about 1 tube every 10 days or so, and that keeps me sane! Please have that vitamin D test done. Take care Wray
