should i continue to take cyclogest throughout my pregnancy

by Nicola
(wales)

Hi, I'm currently 9wks 5d pregnant and in the past 2 years have suffered 5 miscarriges.I am now under a new doc and i have been taking 800mg cyclogest and 10mg prednisolone since my positive prgnancy test.I have had two scans and the baby has been fine. I want to know should i continue taking the cyclogest to full term because my doc has said i would probably stop them at 14 weeks. I'm really worried if i do this a problem will occur.
Thanks Nick

My thoughts...
by: Adama

Hi Nicola,

I thought I'd post my thoughts whilst you wait for a response. I'm also pregnant (9 weeks and 6 days). Good luck with your pregnancy! If that were myself, I would either gradually lower the dose from week 16 (although I'm sure it will be fine to start at week 14) until coming off completely rather than stop cold turkey, or continue throughout the pregnancy but on a lower dose from week 16 onwards. I've heard positive things about 'progesterone babies' where the mothers took progesterone throughout the entire pregnancy. I'm definitely planning to continue Natpro throughout. I will start to lower the dose at week 16. I had a very over-active uterus during my third trimester with my son and I'm hoping that this time around my uterus will be more relaxed with the extra help from the Natpro. Let us know how you get along and what you decide to do!

xXx

should i continue to take cyclogest throughout my pregnancy

Hi Nick I can't better what Adama has said, she's been using high amounts of progesterone too. I would never stop cold turkey, I can never understand why doctors do that, for drugs too, it gives the body a shock to be suddenly without a substance. A sudden drop in progesterone can bring on a miscarriage, although at 14 weeks it should be ok, but I still wouldn't try it. The problem with pessaries it's very difficult to reduce them, short of cutting the up. That's why I prefer a cream! But it's fine to use progesterone till term, Dr Dalton often did that with her patients that needed it. As Adama says, there's evidence they are more intelligent, see here. We do have a page on Pregnancy with more info too. Take care Wray
