Progesterone + placenta encapsulation and breastfeeding

by Allison
(Texas )

Hi there! I’m 9 days postpartum and my milk supply has gone down. I’m doing 200mg of progesterone cream split into twice a day and I started taking my encapsulated placenta pills a few days ago as well. I’ve read where progesterone lowers milk supply and I’ve read where it has no effect. Do you think my lower milk supply is the progesterone or do I just need to drink more water?

Hi Allison

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and weaning off breastfeeding plays havoc on hormones. How long have you been using Natpro progesterone cream for?

I am not sure where you are getting your information from, but Progesterone actually helps with breastfeeding see the Pregnancy page. Have you had your Prolactin level tested? High levels suppress progesterone production, so does oxytocin see here and here.

I suggest that you continue with 200mg progesterone cream only and give your body a chance to adjust. Also what is your Vitamin D3 level? This is very important as a deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone.
