Progesterone got rid of my Headaches!

by Tara Gunderson
(Calgary, AB)

For two years, I tried to find an answer to my chronic daily headaches. I had been to several doctors, dentists, massage therapists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, acupuncture and even a neurologist that couldn't figure out what was wrong with me, nor could they fix it. Even with medication (which came with tons of uncomfortable side effects), I still had my headaches.

I finally did some research on my moods and PMS, because I had always been a bad PMS sufferer. I figured science must have a cure for that by now! I came across a lot of women experiencing the same symptoms as me for PMS, or PMDD. I decided to finally ask my DR about progesterone cream to at least get my mood back on track. I never thought it would help with my mystery headaches.

I used my first dose in the evening before bed, the next day, I did not get a headache! Now that's huge for me considering I suffered every day with one. It's been 7 days on my progesterone cream and still no headache! I wonder now if all along, my headaches were from a severe hormone imbalance. It's no coincidence, as soon as I started, gone!

I'm not yet to PMS, but I'm wondering if it will ease my symptoms when that time comes. I'm excited to find out. But in the end, I'm so happy being headache free!!

Progesterone got rid of my Headaches!
by: Wray

Hi Tara I'm delighted the progesterone helped your headaches. Normally it's known to help those which occur just prior to bleeding, but it is a potent anti-inflammatory, so obviously has helped the daily ones too, see here, here, here, here, here and here. It's such a pity so little is known about progesterone. Dr Dalton was using it over 60 years ago for her patients with migraines, epilepsy, asthma and more. It was she who coined the phrase premenstrual syndrome, or PMS. She would always treat her patients with progesterone, very successfully too. But the amounts she used were far higher than those currently advised, going from a minimum of 200mg/day to 2400mg/day for post natal psychosis. It's on her advice I've been recommending 100-200mg/day, or more if symptoms are severe. You don't mention how much you are using, but it will help your PMS if enough is used. Progesterone drops sharply just prior to bleeding, which send many women into PMS. Please increase the amount a few days before you know your symptoms start. But please read our page on Oestrogen Dominance before you do, as this can occur. Take care Wray
