Progesterone cream with no breaks

by Sigmundi
(USA)

Hello,

I am 53 years old and have my period every 27-29 days. My symptoms include:

Insomnia
Heavy menstrual bleeding with cramps
Migraines a week before cycle
Anxiety, heart palpitations and general chest heaviness (seems to go away when I apply progesterone cream)
Dark circles under eyes
Dizziness (not sure if from too much progesterone)
Hair loss

I am using 40mg (2 pumps of Smokey Mountain Naturals Progesterone cream 21mg per pump) and stop on my cycle day but sometimes have to use during cycle to reduce cramping and bleeding. My questions are:

If I use progesterone everyday without a break, will it convert to estrogen because it stores in my body?
Will I still have a period if I use the cream without a break?
Can estrogen still be high during menstruation?

Thanks!

Progesterone cream with no breaks
by: Joy

Hi Sigmundi

You are in Peri-Menopause which can be a terrible time for most women. You are also suffering from Estrogen Dominance.

You are not using enough progesterone. Please read theHow to use Progesterone Cream page. Between 100-200mg progesterone is needed. Using too little aggravates estrogen receptors making symptoms worse. Often women need to use more progesterone. It is up to the individual to experiment to see what suits them. It can take 2-6 months for symptoms to improve. You might like to consider using Natpro which delivers 50mg per pump.

Usually when in Peri-Menopause and Menopause it is best to use the cream every day with no breaks. I have done so 16 years now with no breaks. Once your body has adjusted to progesterone and your period returns to normal and is regular, you can try using the cream by following your cycle. It does not store in the body but excess estrogen does. It is a mitogen causing fat cells to proliferate. Please read Progesterone Misconceptions.

When to stop progesterone
by: Anonymous

HI Joy,

Thank you for the information and taking time to answer my questions. As I continue using the progesterone cream through my period, is there a time when I should stop using progesterone (like when I turn 57 or something)?

When to stop progesterone
by: Joy

Hi Sigmundi

I wouldn't recommend that you stop using the cream at all. As you get older it is needed even more. You could always stop of course and see how you feel. That is up to you, but symptoms will return once you stop using progesterone. Progesterone therapy is a life long commitment.

Progesterone and Stress
by: Anonymous

I have been using Progesterone Cream for 15 years, (I am 65) once a day, 20 mg, about the same amount each time. I have been using it 5 days, and then taking a break for 2 days, and have kept myself pretty hormonally balanced. Lately (with all the stress of our current pandemic), I have been waking up with heart palpitations, which I am assuming is because I have become estrogen dominant, and possibly am not using enough progesterone. Could this be the cause?

When I use the Progesterone in the morning, the palpitations subside in about one hour. I tried an extra application of Progesterone last night, and I had a hot flash soon afterwards, with a red face, and then slight palpitations, and then later my body calmed down. It felt like the Progesterone "triggered" the Estrogen response.

Does this also mean I am not using enough? I have SVT (Tachycardia) so I need to get the heart palpitations under control. Thanks.

Question for Joy
by: Anonymous

Hi Joy,

In this thread you mentioned using progesterone cream for 16 years non stop. May I ask when you started? Were you in menopause? I'm just wondering how long to use for. If using at such a high dose without a break won't the uterine lining not shed?

Question for Joy
by: Joy

Hi there. I was in Peri-Menopause when I started to use Natpro. It took a while for me to find the amount that suited me, 200mg per day seemed to work for me but when stressed I use more to get me over the stressful time. Stress reduces the benefits of progesterone. Progesterone therapy is a life long commitment, the moment you stop adverse symptoms will return. Many try to stop using progesterone but soon get back on it. You could always reduce or stop and see how you feel. Always reduce slowly, never go cold turkey.

Progesterone does help to shed the lining which is a good thing as it is caused by excess estrogen.

Bleeding
by: Anonymous

Hi Joy,

I see you responded to my question that I just asked in a previous thread, so thank you. When I lower the amount of progesterone cream, I get a migraine and then I start bleeding again.

What I'm seeing is when I use less than 200mg, I start bleeding again so, if progesterone cream is preventing bleeding, how will I have a period if I keep using it?

Bleeding

Hi there. As mentioned previously, your body is still adjusting, this can take time. Once your body has adjusted your cycle will return to normal. Time and patience is needed.

Amount of cream to use

If I'm using 1.7ml (20mg per pump) of Smokey Mountain Natural progesterone cream, how much do I need to use to equal the 200mg recommended Natpro amount?
