Not sure how much progesterone to use

Hi Vicki

I would say you are in Menopause rather than Peri-Menopause and all your symptoms point to being Estrogen Dominance. Your estrogen/progesterone ratio is 59:1, it should be 600:1, see Hormone Testing.

I suggest that you use 400-500mg per day for 4-6 days of the correct progesterone concentration, this usually eases the hot flushes, once they have gone you can slowly reduce the amount of progesterone cream used to a level that suits you. Never use less than 100mg per day as this will allow estrogen to become the dominant hormone again. You might like to read the How to use Progesterone Cream Cream and Anxiety pages. No women needs to use extra estrogen as there is over 100 estrogen mimics in our environment as it is.

Do you know what your Vitamin D level is, as a deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone. It is also connected to every single cell and it’s formation in our bodies. Both vitamin D and progesterone helps with insomnia. Stress destroys both progesterone and vitamin D and both need to be increased during stressful times.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Joy,, I started out using progesterone troches 150mg for 6 wks but they made me feel very heavy headed, so for the last two weeks I have been using a compounded progesterone cream 50mg once a day, I have seen no reduction in symptoms in this time if anything they are worse. I had my vitamin D levels checked they are in normal range as is my thyroid. However My naturopath thinks I have adrenal fatigue, no testing has been done to confirm this she is just going by my symptoms, would this affect my progesterone usage?

Hi Vicki

Torches are not the best delivery method and 96% gets destroyed by the gut and liver – see here,
and the compounded cream that you are using does not contain the correct amount of progesterone that you should be using, so I am not surprised that you are feeling worse. I have already advised you on this and the amount that you should be using in the post above. Just a caution on compounded creams, some of them come mixed with estrogen and testosterone, not what any woman needs.

As long as your vitamin D and thyroid levels are as stated on the Hormone Testing page, then you have nothing to worry about there. Progesterone and vitamin D are both needed for adrenal fatigue as they both help with stress. If stressed more of both is needed during stressful times.
