Hello,

I just received my cream today. I am not sure when to start using it. I had a period this month (June 3rd), after having one on May 17th. I think it was due to having been taking Phytoestrogen and maybe DHEA? I stopped the Phytoestrogen and DHEA when I had my period on June 3rd cause I got scared. I am scheduled to start again on the 30th of June according to my period tracker app I have on my Iphone. So.. my question is when should I start using it?

You quoted that during perimenopaus: Once cycles become erratic, and impossible to follow, it's best to stop following the cycle and use progesterone daily, through any bleeding. It is safe to do so.

I am 45 and think I am perimenopause cause my periods for the last year have been on weird cycles, some months my cycle will be 25 days, other months it will be 36 days.

Do you think I should just start using my cream like you quoted above, even during my period? When should I stop using it? Is there a rest period? Please advise. I am excited to start using but scared when to start. My breasts are VERY tender right now and I am bloated. So I don't know when to start using the cream. I shall wait for your response, which I hope will be soon.

Thank you,

NED

Hi Ned It does sound as if you are in Peri-menopause. Please read through this page, as it explains the ups and downs you can go through. I think your cycle is erratic enough to justify using the progesterone daily. I see no reason for a break, I never took one even when my cycles were regular as my symptoms came back. But it's entirely up to you. It seems the app you have for your phone is based on the 28 day cycle erroneously thought to be normal for all women. It's not, they vary between 21 to 35 days, this makes 28 days the average only. There's more info about this on our pages on Menstruation and Progesterone Misconceptions. Judging by the Breast Tenderness you have and the bloating, it sounds as if you're going to have another 25 day cycle or even shorter. The cream can be rubbed on the breasts, I've found if applied to any painful area it works faster. You can start the cream any time you like if you're not going to follow your cycle. If you do want to, it will be a rather hit and miss affair. Normally it should be used from ovulation, which occurs 12-14 days before bleeding. There's more info on our page How to use progesterone cream. As you don't know when your period will come you will have to do some guess work. The phytoestrogen and DHEA could have interfered with your cycle, or it was just another very erratic one. I'm relieved you've stopped the DHEA though, see here, here, here and here. I normally recommend 100-200mg/day, but it is dependant on symptoms. If they become worse when you start it please increase the amount, but please read the page on Oestrogen Dominance before you start. Take care Wray
