Hi July

Thank you for your kind words about our website.

Progesterone can certainly help with insomnia. However, if 200mg of Natpro is not providing the desired results, you may wish to consider increasing the amount.

Have you had your cortisol levels tested? Cortisol is the body's primary stress hormone, and elevated levels can contribute to sleep disturbances. Chronic stress can also place additional strain on the adrenal glands, which in turn may affect cortisol production and regulation. If you are suffering from Stress at all, please consider taking some of the calming nutrients mentioned on the page.

What is your Vitamin D3 level? If it is low, this could also be contributing to your insomnia. In fact, Vitamin D3 deficiency can reduce the effectiveness of progesterone. Vitamin D plays a vital role in the body, influencing virtually every cell and supporting numerous biological functions.

I hope this information helps.

Hi Joy,

thank you so much for the fast answer!

Before taking progesterone I didn’t have issues with insomnia at all, I fell asleep fast and slept easily through the night (but couldn’t get out of bed in the morning).

I am hypothroid and also have adrenal issues (low cortisol) and mild, almost contrallable Tourette syndrome.
I have unique symptoms (like getting atrophic scars in the face during ovulation out of nowhere, skin darkening, myxedema unter the eyes).
I have the feeling, that the progesterone converts into cortisol..

I don’t have the typical estrogen dominance symptoms like dense breasts (in fact my breasts are very limp and flabby),
no hot flashes and after starting taking Progesterone my period got very light and lasts max one day.

As long as I don’t supplement I’m deficient in Vitamin D.

Serum E2 is low (I know it can accumulate in the tissues), low morning Cortisol and middle ACTH, DHEAS in the low third..

I take Metavive, but have the feeling that my body can’t utilize the hormones or only a small percentage.

I try to eat healthy and take Vit D (5000 ie daily) K2, A, Magnesium, Vit C (Acerola), adrenal cocktails

If the insomnia doesn’t go away I have to stop taking progesterone :(

Hi there

Progesterone is generally considered a calming hormone, so it should be helping with your insomnia. As mentioned previously, if your insomnia is severe, other nutrients and factors may also need to be addressed.

You don't mention how much progesterone you are currently using. Typically, between 100–200mg per day is suggested when using a 3% progesterone cream.

Progesterone does converted into cortisol through various metabolic pathways. You may find the information on this page interesting, particularly the Genova Diagnostics diagram, which explains these pathways in more detail.

I am not familiar with Metavine. Have you considered trying Lugol's iodine drops? I use it daily. You may find this video by Dr David Brownstein informative.

If you feel that progesterone is not helping you, you could consider gradually reducing the amount you are using and then slowly discontinuing it. This may help you determine whether progesterone is benefiting you or whether you feel better without it.

Take care.

Thank you again for taking time to answer!

Metavive is a thyroid medication (containing T4, T3, T2 etc.)

Few years ago I took iodine for approximately 18 months and it caused me severe acne..as soon as I stopped my skin cleared..so I don’t want to take it again..

I take 200 mg progesterone (10% cream 1 pump containing 100 mg, I take 2 pumps) now for 3 month in the luteal phase..the insomnia started right away..on the first week my under eye edema improved more than ever before and I looked prettier and more feminine, but now I get more pimples, skin is dull again and masculine..before I could always sleep, in fact I was always very tired…

I’m not sure whether to increase or not..I wrote another comment (regarding suppressed ovulation) and I’m afraid that my estrogen is too low and the symptoms are because of imbalance?

I want progesterone to help me so bad but I just don’t know what to do :(

Hi July

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. From time to time things fall through the cracks.

Progesterone therapy is not easy, I wish it was. We all need to experiment to see what works for us best.

As you mentioned, you never had an issue with insomnia until you started to use progesterone but you would really like progesterone to work for you. I see you are using a 10% cream. Advice on this website is based on 3% cream. The usual suggestion is to use 100-200mg 3% progesterone cream.

You might want to consider changing creams. Or adjust so that it equates to Natpro. See how you get on with that. Also look at the ingredients of the cream. There could be something in it that is not agreeing with you.

You can of course increase the the amount using 10% and see how you get on with that, but personally that is not something that I would do.

Again, experiment and see what works for you best. Progesterone therapy will work, provided it is used correctly.

Take care.
