Dry nose

by Rose
(Orlando)

I am 48 years old, in February I began experiencing a very dry nose that disrupted my life completely, I was unable to relax, sleep, or rest. I have been to many different doctors, they were unable to figure out what happened to me.

Finally, I realized I was perimenopausal and began BHRT, I started on Vivelle Dot patches, then switched to Biest. I am waiting to begin an estrogen cream, I must wait for my menstrual cycle to begin, it is now late, for the first time in years.

My question is, has anyone else suffered an extreme dry nose from menopause, and did BHRT alleviate the dry nose? My moods have already improved. The Biest contains estriol and estradiol, the estriol is supposed to hydrate the body's tissues.

Dry Nose
by: BH

All I can tell you is that in the last month or so I have experienced a very dry nose also. Last time I had a saliva test (ZRT), back in March my E2 was still considered normal but it was at the very low end of normal. Progesterone was was up to 813 in June but I did not have E2 done at that time. However the last period I had a few weeks ago was very light so maybe my estrogen is getting even lower...

Dry nose
by: Wray

Hi Rose. A lack of omega 3 fish oil can lead to a dry nose, please consider taking some, about 5ml/day. Adding flax oil to your diet would also be benficial. Progesterone can help, but I see you're not using any. Progesterone is a vasodilator, which means it brings more blood to the nose. A progesterone cream put in the nose can be very helpful and soothing, as it's also an anti-inflammatory. It also strengthens collagen which helps. Oestrogen certainly causes water retention, so I suppose you could say it hydrates! If you're going to continue with the oestrogen, please consider using progesterone too. Unopposed oestrogen is dangerous, please see this web page.

Thank you... I will try the omega 3 and flax seed oil, I just started the progesterone cream this past Saturday, hopefully it will do the trick.

Dry Nose
by: Anonymous

I too, suffer from dry nasal passages since my hysterectomy in 2006. I went to an ENT finally last month to learn there is no reason for the dryness other than "it could be from menopause" from the doctor. A cat scan was done along with measurement of the pressure in my ears which came back normal. I find Ocean Spray saline spray helps a great deal. All the best! Diana.

Dry Nose
by: Buffy

In the last few years I have been suffering from a very dry nose and mouth. I have tried drinking more water. The hot summer we are having has kept me inside more with the A/C running, so that can be drying my nose out. The heat in the winter also is very drying. I wake up in the early morning hours and going for a glass of water. I just feel miserable at times. In the last few days I have been taking a couple of Omega-3 fish oil tablets and I think I am getting some relief. I might add that I am through menopause, so that is one reason that I am suffering. All those hormones must keep you young and provide some moisture for you skin.

Dry Nose
by: Wray

Hi Buffy Although dry weather, the A/C and heating in winter don't help, it's most probably being caused by excess oestrogen, as this causes dry eyes and mouth. In very severe cases it develops into Sjogren's syndrome, where high levels of oestrogen have been obsererved. Sjogren's affects far more women than men, the ratio is 9:1, understandable as we make far more oestrogen then men. Please see this paper here. Progesterone can be used to counter the oestrogen, I generally recommend between 100-200mg/day. Please see our page on Menopause for more info. If you should consider using progesterone, please see this web page first on Oestrogen Dominance. It's excellent for ageing too, for the skin, nerve degeneration, dementia and more. Take care Wray

Nose Dryness
by: Anonymous

Hello, I just started to experience a nose dryness and I too could not sleep or rest at night. It made me very anxious at night only. I was kind of freaking out until a friend told me it could be low estrogen since it is a moisturizer.

Dry nose / Progesterone / Neti Pot
by: Beansprout

Wray - I know you recommended that I rub progesterone cream all over the outside of my nose to help relieve dry, swollen nasal passages. But if I've read the previous comments here correctly it is safe to rub "inside" the nose? I just need you to clarify that's true before I try it. Also, how often and how much. Is it best to use a Q-tip or just a finger?

To anyone else reading this buying a Neti Pot will change your life and almost immediately. I bought mine very inexpensively at Walgreen's. The kit included the Neti Pot and 30 all-natural saline packets. Be sure to use distilled water and not tap water unless you boil and cool it first. It is safe to use the Net-Pot every 2 hours as needed. It will help alleviate symptoms caused by allergies, sinus infections, dry air, nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, and rhinitis caused by pregnancy and menopause and promotes better breathing. I, too, have been plagued with nasal stuffiness and swollen nasal membranes that also disrupted my sleep and cause me to feel anxious.

It works quickly, too. Giving you immediate relief. It will even reduce the intensity and duration of the common cold and in many cases prevent you from ever getting sick in the first place. Well worth the $14.

I hope this helps,

Beansprout

Dry nose / Progesterone / Neti Pot
by: Wray

Hi Beansprout I've often used it in my nose when dry or sore, also in my vagina, in my ears, in fact there is no where that I haven't used it, except in my eyes. I always use a finger, I don't like to waste a drop. There are nasal progesterone sprays, as the nose lining absorbs it well. Thanks for the further info on the Neti pot, sounds excellent, cheap too. Take care Wray

Progesterone Spray
by: Beansprout

Wray - All very interesting. Where does one purchase progesterone nasal spray? Also, why the vagina? Is it a faster delivery method or is it used as a lubricant?

Yes, I want to give all of my menopausal sisters a Neti Pot for Christmas. = )

Progesterone Spray
by: WRAY

Hi Beansprout Well I have no idea! I've just had a look, and all I came up with were many studies using one, see these two here and here. All date back to the 1981's and early 90's. Knowing how difficult it is to get it to dissolve, the solvent used would have to be non toxic. Thanks to you I continued searching and came across a fascinating paper, see here, "Building on promising research conducted by Emory University and its own SyNAPSe® study of BHR-100, an intravenous progesterone formulation for the treatment of severe TBI, BHR Pharma is developing BHR-310, an intranasal progesterone powder. This ready-for-use nasal spray is being evaluated as a potential treatment for wounded warriors or athletes with TBI at the site of injury." I have done a page on Traumatic Brain Injury due to the work Emory have done. I wish I could get our cream out to the soldiers too, but would a government listen to me?! It's excellent for PTSD too. Although the studies indicate it should be used within 12 hours of injury, if you read the story on the page, you'll see her step son was in a coma for 6 days before she used it, our cream too. So it doesn't matter what delivery system is used, provided it's efficient. They usually give it via IV transfusion to TBI victims. But evidently the cream is as good. The nose, vagina too, both have a plentiful supply of blood vessels which take up the progesterone...."rapidly absorbed intranasal progesterone." It's excellent for vaginal dryness or inflammation too. Good, but strange present, would love to see their faces! Take care Wray

Folic Acid
by: Diana

Hi again! I wanted to pass along that I began taking Folic Acid 400 mcg, once a day(Walmart was lower in cost)for memory issues and not only did it help a great deal with the "fuzzy memory", "can't put events in order" issues, it helps with the dry nasal and dry mouth issues. :) I find I'm not searching for my Nana's sippy cup as before. I actually had to use a kleenex the other day! Hope this will help you. Take care everyone!

Buckthorn oil
by: Theress

I have been using sea buckthorn oil. It contains omega 7. I also use it topically in my nose and vaginally, I am drinking lots of water and have reduced sugar intake. Fingers crossed, I think it's working.

BOTHERSOME dry nose too!
by: Anonymous

I am also 48 years old and 8 months ago, had a tubal ligation. I still have my period, but I have recently been having 2 short periods a month!

For the past 7 months, I have had extremely dry nasal passages. It feels like I'm breathing in freezing cold air all the time. It is annoying and quiet uncomfortable. I have tried nasal sprays and gels, but that was just temporary. Recently, a friend told me to use coconut oil on a q-tip to help alleviate the dryness, it does help, but again, the dryness comes back.

Not sure what to do!

BOTHERSOME dry nose too!
by: Joy

Please read Wrays reply to Rose in 2009 as it applies to you to. Omega 3 fish oil should help with your dry nose as well as Natpro Progesterone Cream when inserted and rubbed in the nose, it also contains MCT oil (coconut oil) as well as other healing properties.

You are in Peri-Menopause which can be a torrid time for most woman, but it need not be with the correct use of progesterone. A missed period for 12 months puts one in Menopause, so it's safe to say that you are still in PM.

Another vital thing to think about is Vitamin D3, do you know what your level is? A deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone and is connected to every single functioning cell in our body's. Co-factors are needed with taking Vitamin D3.

Please read these pages and the references as they will explain what is happening and was is needed. If progesterone is not used correctly it will not work.

Severe Dry Nose
by: Joy

Hi Mary

Oh that must be so uncomfortable for you. As you have been to doctors with no positive answers may I suggest that you try Natpro Progesterone Cream which is a 3% cream. Using your finger, insert some up the nose and see how you get on. As Natpro is natural, it will take time.

Dryness is often caused by Estrogen Dominance, it seems to hit us as we get older. You could also try eating more good fats, like olive oil, MCT oil and definitely Omega 3. As we age our skin etc tends to dry out.

Read the posts and links posted by Wray and myself on this thread as they will help you to understand more.

Please let us know how you get on.

Dry Nose post Turbinate Surgery
by: Ellen

Hello from Dec 2023, I had recently had a both my nasal turbinates reduced to try and clear up congestion. Afterwards I have been suffering with extreme dryness of the nose to the point where I have panic attacks and cannot sleep or focus on other things. I am heartened to hear that others have had this and found some relief - that it might be due to menopause. I have been told by one ENT to try using vaginal estrogen cream inside the nose 2x daily to try and restart the self-moisturizing/mucosa function of the nose. I wanted to ask if Progesterone is better.

Dry Nose post Turbinate Surgery
by: Joy

Hi Ellen

The answer to your question has already been answered in this thread.  Are you taking Omega 3?  It will help greatly.  I certainly wouldn't recommend inserting an estrogen cream it will add to Estrogen Dominance, link given in this thread.

Should the congestion continue, try taking the amino acid Cysteine.  Please make sure that your vitamin D3 level is optimal.

Cysteine burns fat and builds muscle. A powerful anti-oxidant and free radical scavenger, it boosts the immune system, energy and metabolism. A precursor to glutathione, itself a powerful detoxifier of the liver. Selenium, zinc and cysteine deficiency result in reduced levels of glutathione. An anti-aging amino, reduces age spots, also used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, burns and wounds. Lowers homocysteine, strengthens skin, nails and hair, chelates heavy metals including mercury and lead, a hangover remedy. Breaks down mucus so used in bronchitis, emphysema, tuberculosis and cystic fibrosis.
