Age 52, still getting periods despite high-dose bioidentical progesterone

by Ellen
(Montreal, Canada)

Hello all,

I have been using natural progesterone at about 500 mg per day for perimenopausal symptoms (anxiety, insomnia, night sweats, heart palpitations, etc.) since age 47, and those symptoms improved dramatically with the high dose, and continue to do so. The progesterone has been a godsend in fact. I have also only had sporadic, relatively light periods since then, ranging from 2 to 5 per year. I am now 52 and still get periods, sometimes close together and sometimes with months in between. I keep thinking, should I not be menopausal by now? Does the progesterone delay actual menopause as it also stimulates estrogen receptors? Or am I just too impatient?

Thank you for any thoughts on this.

Hi Ellen

I am so pleased that progesterone helped you. Often one has to use a higher dose before effects are felt. Some women are reluctant to use a higher dose but it helps balance things out quicker.

Any form of bleeding/spotting/clotting indicates that you are still in Peri-Menopause. A missed period with no bleeding whatsoever for 12 months puts you in Menopause. Periods will become extremely erratic. Unfortunately we can't change the natural process of the aging body. However, progesterone makes it bearable.

What you are dealing with now is quite normal. You have been using progesterone for a long time now. I would be surprised if you are suffering from any Estrogen Dominance symptoms.
