Nervous stopping progesterone trying to conceive

Hello, im 32 years old. Trying to conceive my first baby. I frequently have to work nights, that’s when I discovered my progesterone is low. I’m taking 200mg of bioidentcal progesterone three times a day. My basal body temps are still high and I’m on day 15 of my luteal phase.

I’ve read that home pregnancy tests are not always accurate, I just got a negative, but I’m worried about stopping the cream in case I’m pregnant. Will my period eventually come taking the cream if I’m not pregnant?

I’ve been trying to conceive for over two years and my progesterone levels were low, at peak they would be around 18. I read that home pregnancy test are only 75% accurate at the first missed period. By a week- most of them are accurate. The one I used was a dollar store one so I’ll get a better one today and continue taking progesterone.

I don't recommend stopping progesterone if you think you are pregnant. It should be used for the first 4 months, stopping could cause a miscarriage. Between 100-200mg progesterone is needed during luteal phase. If you suspect that you are pregnant, please get your doctor to test.

Thanks Joy,

My main question is, does progesterone stop an on-coming period?

It is important to take it cyclical if trying to get pregnant as taking it throughout your cycle can prevent pregnancy. I did have a colleague test my B-hCG today at work so it will take a couple days to get back.

The vaginal dose for progesterone is 200-600mg/day according to the guideline that a pharmacist who prescribes bioidentical hormones provided me with. I have not stopped it yet, but am wondering if I'm just preventing the inevitable? I will wait for the test results.

Progesterone can disrupt the monthly cycle when first using it. It could be that your body is still adjusting to progesterone. I do feel that 600mg is a bit too much though, it should be between 100mg-200mg as mentioned.

I wanted to ask Joy why she says 600mg is too much. Is it dangerous or is it just unnecessary? Further explanation would be helpful. thank you.

A friend of mine had infertility for three years-un-explained. She used 600mg daily of bioidentical progesterone vaginally and conceived the first month she tried. She is currently 20 weeks pregnant. This is also the dose that her naturopath suggested.

Update: I'm not pregnant. My blood test came back negative. So I will stop now until the start of my luteal phase. Some context Joy as to why you think 600mg is not considered safe would be helpful. I am a primary care provider, and do appreciate evidence-based information-which I did receive from the pharmacist. Thanks

No 600mg is not dangerous, some even use as much as 800mg. Often, unless there are severe symptoms, that amount is not necessary when trying to to conceive.
