Estrogen or progesterone??? Thats the big question

by Lory
(Arizona)

I have one Dr tell me to take estrogen for my heart, minimum 1mg up to 2mg per day. I have heart attack/stints in the family. I have been told my lipoprotein number is around 300 and need the Estrogen. I was only on progesterone cream for almost a year when I was told progesterone is only for the baby and we dont need it after menopause.

I have put on weight with Estrogen, I am moody, and not really sure if the Estrogen helps or hurts the heart after menopause. I weaned myself down to 1mg per day and decided to take dim to help. I am putting 1 pump of your cream on in the am and 200mg capsule form at night to help sleep. I get different opinions from every Dr I talk to. Please help.

Estrogen or progesterone??? Thats the big question

Hi Lory

To answer your question, progesterone!

Oh dear, the misconceptions about progesterone is frightening. More frightening is that a lot comes from the medical professionals, who quite frankly like to prescribe estrogen for obvious reasons. There is no money to be made in prescribing a natural progesterone. What nonsense is that to say that progesterone is only for the baby, seriously the mind boggles!!

As you have most probably read on this website many times, we do not believe that women should take extra estrogen. However, after saying that, there are some women who do benefit by taking it. That choice lies totally on the individual. I can tell you though, that estrogen can be a cause for heart disease. See here. Progesterone actually helps to prevent heart disease.

Such a shame that there is so much misinformation flying around by misinformed people.

Good luck.

Hi Lory

It is best to wean off, it's kinder on your body. Others have gone cold turkey but need to use a higher dose of progesterone to help get them through it.
