Experiencing hot flashes

by Robin

I am 50 years old and experiencing hot flashes. My last period was 9 months ago. I currently live in France and asked a Pharmacy for Progesterone cream and they gave me Progestogel (composition: Progesterone 1g.).

I used it for 3 days and felt a little dizzy on the 3rd day so I discontinued use. About a week later I felt hot flashes again and used just a half a dose (one day) and feel better.

My question is: Is Progestogel safe and how much and how often should I really be using it? Thank you.

Hi Robin. Progestogel is safe as it is progesterone, albeit in a very small strength at only 1%. It means 1g of cream will contain only 10mg of progesterone. Most of the successful studies find between 100-200mg progesterone is needed to alleviate symptoms. To achieve this amount you would have to use between 10-20ml of cream per day. As you are almost in menopause (the average age is 51), you might like to see this page too.

The site doesn't give much info on the ingredients used, only that it's a "hydroalcoholic progesterone gel". The symptoms you've experienced often occur when first using progesterone, please see this web page. Take care, Wray
