Zoloft and Progesterone

by Natalia
(Abu Dhabi)

I am a 34 year old female. I started using Zoloft 6 months ago. It has helped with concentration and short-temperedness.

The depression has subsided but I still feel lethargic in the Luteal Phase and during menses. I also have a fibroid. I would like to know if I can use progesterone during this time.

Zoloft and Progesterone

Hi Natalia. Yes you can use progesterone while on Zoloft. But you might consider coming off the Zoloft slowly. There are many natural antidepressants which have no adverse side affects, unlike the Zoloft. Please see here. It sounds as if you do need progesterone, judging by your symptoms. Fibroids are caused by excess oestrogen, which is also causing the lethargy etc. For more info on fibroids, please see here.

As you have excess oestrogen, you should read this page before you start progesterone, as oestrogen dominance can be very disconcerting. Take care, Wray

Hi Wray, thank you sooo much for the detailed information. I am pleased to see that I have a choice with the natural antidepressants. I will definitely ask my doctor for guidelines.

It has been a really trying time for me but feel more hopeful with the information. Your advice and guidance for us women is really appreciated!! Bless you!!

CAN BE TERRIFYING
by: Kathy

I am on Sertraline and have been for 30 years or so. I'm almost through Menopause and decided to try "Kokoro" Progesterone cream.

I had devastating results. I turned into a mental insecure anxiety disaster. I couldn't handle anything.

For me (Maybe not everyone) Progesterone counteracts Sertraline.

This also happened to me when I was on the "Nuvaring" birth control vaginal ring about 15 years ago. Same symptoms. I became very depressed and confused.

Be CAREFUL when taking Progesterone if you are taking antidepressants!!!

At LEAST start out with very small amounts to see how you feel.

Can be Terrifying

Hi Kathy

I am sorry to hear of your bad experience with progesterone.  This usually happens when progesterone is not being used correctly.  For example, not enough progesterone is being used or using a cream with a low concentration such as Kokoro.  Between 100-200mg is needed per day using a 33.33% cream such as Natpro.  Kokoro is a 20.40% cream.  You would have had to use a lot more cream.  Your estrogen receptors were aggravated adding to your adverse symptoms and Estrogen Dominance symptoms.  It can take 2-6 months before the body adjusts to progesterone therapy, sometimes longer, it all depends on how severe symptoms are.  The cream should be used no less than twice a day, morning and again at night as explained on this website.  Please read the How to use Progesterone Cream page for more information on this.

Progesterone does not interfere with any medication that one may be using, provided it is used correctly.  It is natural, the say progesterone that our body produces.

A Vitamin D3 deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone.  If your level was/is low then this would add to the problem. D3 is vital for those suffering with depression.

Best wishes going forward.
