It is the pregnancy hormone and as such vital for a successful pregnancy. It's a lack of progesterone in the early stages of pregnancy which causes a miscarriage. The synthetic progestins (English) or progestogens (American) cause foetal abnormalities when taken during pregnancy. In fact some package inserts recommend an abortion if a woman taking them is found to be pregnant. I would never recommend oral progesterone either, as 90% is destroyed by the gut and the liver as it passes through.
