Will progesterone tablets increase the risk of abortion?

I'm not quite clear as to the difference between progesterone, progestins and progestogens. My question is, if I consume tablets containing progesterones, will I have a miscarriage/abortion?

Abortion and progesterone

The explanation on our home page will give you a better idea than the amount of space here allows me too. It also gives a diagram of the molecular structure of both so you will get a good idea of the difference. I have put the link below.

In answer to your question about whether you will have a miscarriage, the answer is 'no' provided it's natural progesterone. It is the pregnancy hormone and as such vital for a successful pregnancy. It's a lack of progesterone in the early stages of pregnancy which causes a miscarriage.

The synthetic progestins (English) or progestogens (American) cause foetal abnormalities when taken during pregnancy. In fact some package inserts recommend an abortion if a woman taking them is found to be pregnant.

I would never recommend oral progesterone either, as 90% is destroyed by the gut and the liver as it passes through. The best routes are injections, suppositories, buccal drops or a transdermal cream. Hope this helps. Take care Wray
