Should I use progesterone cream?

by Janice
(USA)

I am 67 years old. I would like to know if using progesterone cream would be alright for me. I seem to be very down a lot of the time. As well as very angry. I snap a lot. I cry a lot. Could this be a progesterone shortage?

Should I even consider taking progesterone cream? I am afraid of putting on any more weight. I also am bloated a lot. Please let me know.

Hi Janice. It's never too late to use progesterone! It does help with feeling down, as it raises serotonin levels in the brain. It's a lack of serotonin which causes the anger too, the snapping and the crying.

Don't be concerned about putting on weight, progesterone does speed metabolism slightly. Oestrogen on the other hand causes weight gain, one of the reasons farmers use it for their cattle, makes them eat more and gain weight.

I would suggest you have yourself checked for candida, as that causes bloating. It can take time to eliminate it, but worth it! If you'd like to know more about candida, please send me an email from the 'contact us' button on our web site, 'option 1'. Take care Wray

Do you need progesterone cream with high cholesterol?
by: SHIRLEY

I have read that cholesterol makes progesterone in your body. If you have high cholesterol would you still need or should you be using progesterone cream?

I had a total hysterectomy ten years ago. I am 69 years old and my cholesterol is 230. My doctor has me on 20mg of Liprator.

Hi Shirley. You are correct, progesterone is made from cholesterol. But having high cholesterol doesn't have a bearing on how much progesterone is converted. Progesterone is antiatherogenic, it prevents lipid peroxidation and platelets aggregating so could help lower the high cholesterol. Cholesterol does start increasing about 3 years before natural menopause and from the time of surgical menopause:

You might care to read the following too, as lowering cholesterol naturally is easy enough:

Hi Amelia Endo is a difficult problem, it's caused by oxidative stress and large amounts of antioxidants are needed to reverse it. It's exacerbated by oestrogen, which is an inflammatory hormone, plus being a mitogen causing cells to proliferate. We do have a page on Endometriosis you could look through. I would have to know a bit more before I could answer your queries. For instance you don't say how much progesterone you're using or when you use it. I have found with endo generally 500mg/day is needed. Some women can do with less, but starting high is best and then reducing slowly. Progesterone can upset the cycle when first using it. But as you've been on it for 9 months, it makes me wonder when you're using it. You ask if it's safe to use progesterone, the answer is yes. Take care Wray

When and how much?
by: Anonymous

I read so much conflicting information on when to apply progesterone cream. Some say the first 15 days of the cycle, some say the last 15 days of the cycle. I've read start on day 8 and continue to bleeding starts. I'm confused. Please help.

Hi there I've never heard anyone say the first 15 days of the cycle. But yes to the day 8. Although the majority advise using it from day 14, this is also incorrect. We do have info on our page How to use progesterone cream. Take care Wray
