Question

by Becky
(Denver, CO, USA)

I am 54 and have just completed a year with no period as of June. I started having hot flashes about 6 months ago. I started using progesterone cream (natural) and a natural estrogen cream. I used the progesterone every day except for the first 5 days of the month I took a break. I used the estrogen cream 3 times a week and also skipped the first 5 days of the month. Hot flashes went away. My question is do I need the estrogen cream? I keep reading about estrogen dominance and it's kind of confusing.

Hi Becky It can be confusing. You don't need the oestrogen, progesterone is effective against Hot Flushes. But if you do decide to stop it, please do so slowly, as it could bring back the hot flushes. Going cold turkey will certainly bring them back. You might have to increase the progesterone while you do this too. I'm not sure how much you're using, but I recommend 100-200mg/day. We do have a few pages you could look through, How to use progesterone cream, Peri-menopause, Menopause and Oestrogen Dominance. The pages explain how progesterone works and adverse symptoms which can be experienced, and how much to use to overcome them. Take care Wray
