Progesterone Masking Miscarriage?

by Penny

I found out very early that I was pregnant because I have a very short post-ovulation time. The day before my fourth week, I started to bleed. I went to my fertility doctor the next morning and she discovered that my progesterone level was 6.8. She put me on 400mg of Prometrium a day and 90mg of Crinone.

This stopped the bleeding after about four days. Now I am 8.5 weeks pregnant and the fetal pole has failed to grow beyond 5.9mm and has a heartbeat of 71 BPM. I looked up the statistics and found that I have a 91% chance of losing the pregnancy. Now I am waiting for the pregnancy to “declare” itself.

My question is: does the Prometrium mask the symptoms of miscarriage? If I miscarry, will I know it at all before I come off of these supplements?

Thanks!

Progesterone Masking Miscarriage?
by: Wray

Hi Penny. Both Prometrium and Crinone are progesterone which is vital for a successful pregnancy. If it fails neither compound will mask a miscarriage. I had a miscarriage at 8 weeks and it's very evident when it happens, the foetus plus sac is about the size of your palm. As you have a short luteal phase it would be ideal to start using progesterone before you intend falling pregnant next time. Please see this web page. Take care.

Prometrium
by: Anonymous

I have had five miscarriages and for two I was on Prometrium 100mg, vaginally, three times a day. Both times they were missed miscarriages and I found out at an ultrasound appointment two weeks after the fact. According to my OB, the Prometrium can prolong a doomed pregnancy.

But... you should call and ask to be checked. That way you will know for sure. Good luck!

Hello. I am currently pregnant and wondering something similar..
If I was to miscarry would it be evident or would the progesterone mask the bodies ability to miscarry naturally? In which case is that dangerous to my health?

I’m currently 5.2 weeks and had some cramping and spotting after really over exerting myself with three big days at a waterhole with my other children. so I Increased my dose from 150mg progesterone a day to 200mg a day.
Im not interested in getting an ultrasound this early as I don’t trust the radiation on my baby in these early formative months.

I’m just waiting to see how things progress like all pregnancies. I’m just wanting some reassurance that if they were to change direction (god forbit) would the progesterone inhibit the process and could delaying a miscarriage pose a risk for me? Or would ot just happen regardless of the progesterone cream?

Ladies I am so sorry to hear of your past experiences. Sending you all so much love and strength.
Wray, if you don’t mind, may I please ask how much progesterone you were having (dosage amount) when you sadly miscarried?
I’m currently having 200mg a day and wondering if it could delay a miscarriage.
I don’t wish to have any ultra sounds and instead monitor my pregnancy with growth and movement check ups but would like to know how to handle it, should the worst case scenario occur.
I’m hoping that despite the progesterone even in a high dose (400mg) that the body would naturally know what to do.

Hi there

Unfortunately Wray is no longer with us so I am unable to answer how much progesterone Wray used.

Progesterone certainly helps to prevent Miscarriages especially if progesterone levels are low. Low progesterone can also prevent pregnancies. Wray linked a page in 2009 a further down to her pregnancy page which will help you to understand more.

Take care.

Hi Jasmine

I suggest that you continue to use 200mg per day, it will only benefit you. It is needed for a healthy pregnancy especially if one experiences miscarriages. There are other factors that could cause Miscarriages as mentioned on the page.

Please refer to the pregnancy page that Wray refers to further down on this thread.

Best wishes.
