Progesterone Hertoghe
by: Wray

Hi Gigi What he has to say is on the whole true, but the English could be better. Some sentences make no sense at all...... "For example, the discrepancy between men and women in sexual interest and sensitivity at age 40 may not only be due to the sharp decline of testosterone, the hormone of desire, in women at that age. It possibly and partially could be due to an increase in libido, caused by hyperestrogenemia".....the rest of the sentence contains even more gibberish. Neither of the two hormones are solely responsible for a good libido, it's far more complicated than simply ascribing it to one hormone. Take care Wray

Which hormones are responsible for the subcutaneous abdominal fat in young women? The fat that hangs flaccid even on the sides?
Thanx!

Abdominal Subcutaneous Fat in premenopausal women
by: Wray

Hi there Subcuntaneous fat is increased by oestrogen in both men and women. It stimulates all cells to proliferate, including fat cells. Abdominal fat is visceral fat, and it's caused by testosterone in both men and women. In fact it's notorious at causing a middle aged woman to get a middle aged spread, see here and here. I had read that subcutaneous abdominal fat is not visceral and was caused by cortisol!

Cortisol
by: Wray

Hi there Subcutaneous fat is subcutaneous fat, visceral fat is visceral fat. There's always going to be both in the abdominal region. I haven't come across any papers which say subcutaneous fat is caused by cortisol. Cortisol's prime function is to increase blood glucose, suppress the immune system, and aid in the metabolism of fat, protein and carbohydrate. It also decreases bone formation, hence the danger of osteoporosis when taking corticosteroids. Take care Wray
