Progesterone and older moms

by Mary
(Rantoul, IL, USA)

I am 46 and have had 3 miscarriages in the past 4 years. My doctor said if I get pregnant again he will immediately put me on progesterone. But won't progesterone also help me get pregnant?

If my progesterone is low enough that he thinks I need to be on it immediately as soon as I get a positive pregnancy test, should I be on it before I get pregnant? I have had low progesterone for about 18 years now since the birth of my youngest.

Hi Mary If you have low progesterone, whether you want a child or not, it should be addressed. Particularly as you say you've had it for 18 years! Miscarriages are a sign that progesterone is low, and it's often at the first period after falling pregnant that they occur. Far too early to know if pregnant or not, so yes I would always recommend using it beforehand if a woman has had miscarriages. Too often it's given too late, it must be used from ovulation to be effective. Please see this web page. Take care, Wray

Low progesterone for 18 years

I have tried to address the problem. Unfortunately my insurance company doesn't agree it is a problem and stuck me with the bill for a full work-up exam for it. They refuse to cover progesterone unless I am pregnant. I am really dismayed that men can get viagra covered on the insurance but I can't get progesterone.

Hi Mary. I'm dismayed by this news, but it's because Viagra is a drug and progesterone not. There is so much ignorance too, if more was known about it, I'm sure it would be on insurance. I do hope you can resolve the problem. Progesterone creams are relatively cheap, it might be worth getting it, I'm sure it will help you. Take care, Wray
