On new HRT....A little confused

by Angel
(Ohio)

I went and saw a new doctor who is a super guy. He listened to me and put me on two patches one is called climara Pro and the other a Testosterone patch that is called androderm.

The reason I am so confused is that the climara pro patch contains progestin not progesterone. I wanted progesterone and I thought he understood that. Should I call and ask for a patch that contains estrogen and progesterone or just stick with this one. I am a little scared of the progestin. I have heard it's not good to take???? I don't know, why does this have to be so confusing and so hard.

I was on a compounded testosterone gel that I used vaginally but I had an allergic reaction to it so now I am afraid to use anything that is vaginally. I was on vivelle dot 1mg of estradiol and I really liked it but I thought I would give this new patch a try but I didn't know that it contained progestin instead of progesterone. What can I do? Any suggestions? Is there a patch that contains progesterone? Sorry so many questions.

Thanks so much.

Great Questions!! How did vivelle help you? I thought taking estrogen does not help. I thought we needed progesterone not estrogen? Are there times when estrogen is needed?

Estrogen
by: Angel

I was told I didn't need to take progesterone only estrogen. I don't have any ovaries or my uterus so my previous doctor told me there was no need for progesterone. I feel a lot better using both I just am hoping I can get my new doctor to change it from progestin to progesterone.

I think you should stop the hormone patches he gave you. There are side effects unless you use totally natural micronized progesterone. The key is micronized! That process makes it exactly like your body's progesterone. There are no side effects, to my knowledge. I have been on 100 mg of the micronized progesterone cream for sometime now with no side effects. It reversed some polyps that I had in the uterus and I feel so much better.

On new HRT....A little confused

Hi Angel You are right, in fact many of the progestins are androgenic, see our page on HRT for more info. I don't recommend oestrogen to any women, least of all oestradiol, it's the most potent of all the oestrogens. Unfortunately progesterone doesn't come in patch form, as higher amounts are needed compared to the progestin. For more info see our page on Delivery systems. Many doctors confuse the two, believing they are one and the same. The progestin molecule is so changed, it bears little resemblance to progesterone. If you want to try progesterone see our page on How to use progesterone cream. But before you do please see our page on Oestrogen Dominance first. I recommend 100-200mg/day dependent on symptoms. I don't advise testosterone to any woman either, it increases the risk of visceral fat, cancer and heart disease, see here, here, here, here, here here, here, here, here and here. Unfortunately many doctors are unaware of how important progesterone is, and think it's not needed once a hyst has been performed. But progesterone regulates gene expression, has a positive fundamental effect on cell differentiation and growth, with anti-oxidative and autoimmune anti-inflammatory mechanisms. It positively effects the nervous system by stimulating neurotrophic factors, quenching oxidative hyperactivity and regulating autoimmune responses. Take care Wray
