The formulation for Natpro natural progesterone cream has remained almost unchanged since it was originally developed in the years 1996/7. Well, that's now changed.

Why?

The pursuit of an organic natural progesterone cream that is free of both "parabens" and "PEG" has long remained my dream and its now been realized. Its taken a long time coming and I'll make no secret of the fact that the path has lead down many blind allies and hit many obstacles. The real difficulty has been in getting a "paraben free" preservative system that doesn't simply substitute another "unnatural" ingredient.

What's wrong with parabens?

There are relatively rare documented instances where parabens have been found to cause skin irritation, contact dermatitis, or allergic skin reactions. They are considered to be of low irritation potential compared with many other preservatives. Although there is no evidence that any cosmetics containing parabens pose a health risk they can, however, cause reactions in individuals with paraben allergies. Only a tiny percentage of the general population are allergic to parabens. Some studies have led to concerns over their continued use, and there is currently a shift away from them. This is despite the rejection of the breast cancer tissue study by the majority of the scientific community, and the extremely weak estrogenic effect found for butylparaben (no effect was seen with methyl or propyl parabens previously used in Natpro).

Despite this, my attitude has been... "why take any risk when it can be avoided?"

Most organic preservatives simply can't stand up to the rigorous "challenge testing" required to meet the necessarily high standards to ensure aqueous creams avoid becoming breeding grounds for toxic moulds and bacteria. There are many organic preservatives out there that are touted as doing the job. The truth is they simply don't do a good enough job without "support" from conventional preservatives such as the parabens. Take the much publicized "grapefruit seed extract"... it simply can't work alone.

Natpro's new system works.

It has undergone rigorous challenge testing. But that's not all that's different. We've also changed (again after much painstaking research) the emulsifying agents to a completely "PEG free" combination.

What's "PEG" mean?

Well, its shorthand for 'polyethylene glycol'. Its found in many formulas and has been causing some concern in recent times as a potential health hazard. Although this is far from proven I decided to act now rather than later so we developed an alternative system that is entirely "PEG free".

The new Natpro natural progesterone cream formula is about as natural as you can get. I'm also particularly pleased because its "emolience" or "feel quality" is, if anything, an improvement on the old formula.

But perhaps most important of all...

...its functional ability to ensure the efficient transdermal delivery of the progesterone itself is second to none.

Lets look at the contents in more detail :

• The progesterone in Natpro is derived from the soya-bean and it is identical to the progesterone your body makes. Officially described as "Progesterone Ph. Eur. USP JP" it is made principally from stigmasterol, a steroidal sapogenin, found in the soya bean. Yams (genus Dioscorea), contain diosgenin, which fell out of use as the principal sterol from which to synthesise progesterone in 1976. In the southern United States the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is called a yam, as are some edible members of the aroids. These plants do not contain any sapogenins. Don't confuse Natpro natural progesterone cream with a bean or yam "extract". Such extracts do not contain progesterone.
  

• Organic virgin Macadamia Oil - Natpro is made with "organic virgin" macadamia oil. Why is this important? Part of the answer is because...
  • its not a mineral oil and
  • its unrefined

  Lets examine these points more closely:

Mineral oils, being petro-chemicals, are potentially harmful because they are "endochrine disruptors". They rob your body of the oil soluble vitamins A, D, E & K , and so deprive you of vital nutrients. Never use any product on your skin that contains mineral oils.

Heating or refining any vegetable oil causes damage. The good "cis" fatty acids that are found in vegetable oils are turned into bad "trans" fatty acids and the result is highly carcinogenic. Don't use refined oils.

Analysis of organic virgin macadamia oil shows that it is not damaged by the oil extraction process. Oil from the macadamia nut is one of the best natural emollients (feels good) and being high in mono-unsaturated fatty acids is more stable (doesn't go bad) than other oils. It restores the water levels of the various epidermal layers. This is the only oil in which the composition of its fatty acids is the same as that of secretions from the human body.

Being organic this is more costly than ordinary virgin oil but ensures that Natpro is free from contamination by agricultural chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides (both are endocrine disruptors).

Macadamia oil is prized for containing approximately 22% of the Omega-7 palmitoleic acid, which makes it a botanical alternative to mink oil, which contains approximately 17%. This relatively high content of "cushiony" palmitoleic acid plus macadamia's high oxidative stability make it a highly desirable ingredient in skin care preparations in general.

• Vitamin E - Standard preparations contain only 0.1%. However, in addition to the vitamin E found naturally in macadamia oil, Natpro natural progesterone cream contains a further 0.2%.
  
  
• The new three part emulsifier system...
  
  
  • Glyceryl stearate is a clear, oily liquid readily able to penetrate the skin and made by combining Glycerin and Stearic Acid. It is a natural fatty compound very effective as an emulsifier, emulsion stabilizer, emollient, moisturizer and viscosity builder in creams and lotions. It is also an opacifying and pearlizing agent in cosmetics. The glycerol stearate used in Natpro is of plant origin (corn-based), is biodegradable, practically non-toxic orally and causes no skin irritation. It is dispersible in water and is also soluble in oil and alcohol, making it an ideal ingredient for skin applications. In a clinical trial of over 1,200 patients with eczema, it was found to produce absolutely no adverse reactions.
  • Cetearyl alcohol is a natural alcohol made from coconut that emulsifies, adds viscosity, and stabilizes. It is an ideal natural emulsion stabilizer, opacifying agent, moisturizer and foam boosting surfactant, as well as an aqueous and nonaqueous viscosity-increasing agent. It imparts an emollient feel to the skin. It is not really an "alcohol", such as rubbing alcohol, which would dry the skin, but strictly speaking is an emulsifying wax, made by combining fatty alcohols from vegetable sources, such as coconut fatty alcohol.
  • Cetearyl glucoside is a natural emulsifying wax extracted from corn and coconut and is both mild and non-irritating. It is made from vegetable-derived Cetearyl Alcohol and Glucose. It smoothes the consistency of the cream.
    
    
• Glycerine - This is also of vegetable origin. It is excellent for hydrating the skin and although there are many equally effective substances for doing this, most are synthetic and potentially harmful. It is invaluable as a natural source ingredient with emollient like properties which can soften and soothe the skin and it assists the outer epidermis in retaining moisture

  • Organic citrus extract is a non toxic phyto-pharmaceutical of organic origin that acts by destroying the cellular membrane of a micro-organism.
