My job as a dental technician damaged my immune system

by Liliana Brewster
(Perth Western Australia)

At the age of 17 I started my apprenticeship as a dental technician. Much of my work over the next 7yrs involoved the use of petrochemical products mainly monomers and polymers the basics ingredients used to make plastics in order to manufacture dentures.
I began to have adverse effects from the start, including weight gain, acne, and tiredness.

I left my profession when I had my first child at 25 but by then, I believe, most of the damage had been done. I saw my doctor many times complaining of excess tiredness and muscular weakness, though i do remember feeling better whilst pregnant possibly due to the higher levels of progesterone.

By the time I was 30 I could no longer tolerate any chemically based cleaning products even scented perfumes and soaps made me feel ill.
At 40 I became very unwell unable to feel my feet and eventually my whole body up to my neck felt as if it was numb. I was diagnosed with MS after a MRI scan.

My research eventually lead me to progesterone cream which helped with my healing. I am now 50 and entering menopause and have not been feeling well so have resumed the use of progesterone cream.
I found this site after deciding to do more research and now use the Natpro cream and have gained a much better understanding of how to use the cream effectively, so thankyou very very much I sincerely hope that research will eventually lead to a greater aknowledgment, especially amongst the medical fraternity, of how natural progesterone can make a difference to people with auto immune disease as well as endocrine imbalances.

Hi Liliana Bless you for the kind words! I'm in the process of putting together a book on oestrogen mimics, when it will be finished is another matter! I would love to put your story into it. Since I first read about the endocrine disruptors in 1998, they have increased 100%. There are now over 100 on the planet, with more being discovered all the time. Unlike you, most people have no idea what's happening or the knowledge you had to realise what is causing their problems. Unfortunately their doctors don't either, and all too often the woman is told it's all in her mind and to pull herself together. As you live in Australia, I would ask you to have a vitamin D test done. With the Australian policy of covering up when in the sun, much damage is being done. Levels are low in many Australians, please see here and here. For more info please see the Vitamin D council and GrassrootsHealth websites. This is an excellent video to watch too, see here. Incidentally progesterone is helpful for both peripheral neuropathy (which I believe your numbness was), neurodegeneration and MS, see here, here, here, here, here and here. I'm running out of space, so will open a new comment below. Take care Wray

Hi again Liliana There is some reason to believe a lack of vitamin D causes MS, see here, here, here, here and here. A lack of vitamin D is found in all autoimmune diseases, see here, here and here. Dendritic cells are implicated in the initiation of autoimmune diseases, vitamin D inhibits their production, see here. Progesterone also inhibits dendritic cells, whereas oestradiol increases them, see here here. In all the autoimmune diseases I've looked at, a high level of oestrogen is observed and low progesterone. Or the ratio of the two hormones is skewed. Oxidative stress is prevalent in autoimmune diseases too, usually as a result of low vitamin D. I'm pleased you are evidently using the progesterone as it should be used, which is as and when needed. It shouldn't be used as a fixed daily amount, but adjusted to suit needs, even using it hourly if symptoms are bad. Take care Wray
