Is BioIdentical Progesterone safe during pregnancy?

by Jami
(Fruita, CO)

I have been taking 100mg of bioidentical progesterone for the past year. My family doctor prescribed it because he said my progesterone levels were low. I just recently found out that I am expecting. I asked my OB/GYN if I should stop taking the bioidentical progesterone and he said I could continue taking it, however, my family doctor that prescribed it said I should stop taking it.

I am now confused. Can bioidentical progesterone hurt the baby? I don't know who's advice I should listen to and I don't want to do anything to harm my pregnancy (I am high risk already due to an incompetent cervix).

Thanks for your help!

Is BioIdentical Progesterone safe during pregnancy?
by: Wray

Hi Jami. Yes it is safe, but if you have had or could have a threatened miscarriage you will need about 200mg/day. I'm currently helping three women who have had miscarriages, all are using Natpro at 200mg/day. The one woman had a healthy boy about two months ago, she used the cream for her entire pregnancy. The other two are only a few weeks pregnant and doing well. You should now be using the cream daily and not follow your cycle! Please see this web page.

I'm a bit concerned you say you're 'taking' the progesterone. You should be aware oral progesterone is mostly destroyed as it passes through the gut and liver. Please see these papers:

Yes, you can be on progesterone, even if it's not bioidentical, I know a couple of people who had a lot of miscarriages because their progesterone levels were too low. I found this website helpful when looking for articles about bioidentical progesterone...
