I am worried about Progesterone leakage

by G.Zafar
(Paris)

Dear Wray,
I on 7th day Post IUI and doctor has given me progesterone vaginally as 200 mg x2 per day for initial 15 days. My problem is that when at night I insert the medicine it does not leak out. But after a gap of 12 hour when at afternoon I take the capsule then although I lay down for 2 hours almost but it leaks out in creamy shape and I can clearly see it on my panty liner. I am really worried about this. I think I am not doing this therapy properly. Can I take an extra capsule daily to make up the deficit although it was not prescribed by the doctor.
Ps. The hospital has sent me my whole prescription about the whole cycle before the start of cycle before doing any blood work.
I am really looking forward to your answer.

Thanks alot

I am worried about Progesterone leakage
by: Wray

Hi there This is a problem with vaginal capsules, suppositories are generally better, as they take longer to dissolve. Although I prefer using a cream, as it can be applied anywhere. So I suggest you open the capsule, add the contents to a small amount of natural skin cream, and rub it anywhere on your skin. You can apply some in your vagina too. We do have a page on Pregnancy you could look through, plus this one here. We also have more info on our Menstruation and Progesterone Misconceptions pages. Take care Wray

Content of capsule in natural skin cream?
by: G.Zafar

Dear Wray,

Thanks alot for your reply and apology for my late response. I just wanted to ask what do you mean exactly by 'natural skin cream'. Can I mix the content of progesterone capsule in a body lotion at home?

Thanks alot

Content of capsule in natural skin cream?
by: Wray

Hi there Thanks for your apology, but it's really not needed. I tend to say natural skin cream, as most of them contain toxic substances! So of course you can add it to any cream you have, or oil for that matter. It won't mix with water. If you're interested in the contents of the skin care you have, please take a look at the Skin Deep website Take care Wray

Questions about hormonal disblance
by: G.Z

Dear Wray,

I got my periods two-days ago and my first IUI has proved to be a failure. I am really shattered. It has been almost two years that I am trying to conceive. I conceived right after marriage in june 2010 and it was turned into a miscarriage after 2.5 months. I did not find a doctor on time. Now when I read your useful writings about progesterone I doubt sometime that may be there was a severe shortage of progesterone in my body during early pregnancy and I could not carry my baby and bleeding started. Since then I have changed so much doctors, finished 5 or 6 cycles of clomid and ovidrelle and vaginal progesterone but in vain. I dont know what is the matter but I there there is some hormonal disbalance due to which I can not concieve. My husband and I have completed all the tests but those are ok. I have been taking my BBT for the last 7 months. My temperaturs are normally very low like 35.8 C(minimum) before ovulation and 36.6 maximum after ovulation. Is this a sign of low hormonal level or what? Please guide me what type of hormonal tests I should take. I am going to try a new gynachologist next week. Please guide me in some way because I am just fed up of my life. after this failure. I need some hope.
Thanks for bearing with me.

Questions about hormonal disblance
by: Wray

Hi GZ I'm puzzled why they are giving you ovulation induction drugs, when you say you fell pregnant naturally in 2010. Have you since stopped ovulating, and that's why you need the drugs? I feel the new gynae will only offer you the same drugs and protocol. We do have a page on Infertility which might help you. Do you get enough sun, or do you take vitamin D supplements, and is the dose high enough? Vitamin D is vital for ovulation and conception, plus it's essential for the growth of the foetus, see here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here. These are excellent videos to watch too, see here and here.
Even as far back as 1947 10,000-20,000iu's were suggested, see here. A lack of it not only reduces the benefits of progesterone, but can cause miscarriages, see here, here and here. Please have a test done. Continued below.

Questions about hormonal disblance

Hi GZ For more info on vitamin D levels, test kits etc see the Vitamin D Council, GrassrootsHealth, Birmingham Hospital and Vitamin D Links websites. Blood levels should be 70-100ng/ml or 175-250nmol/L and not the 30ng/ml or 75nmol/L most labs and doctors regard as adequate. The minimum daily dose should be 5000iu's per day, although the latest research indicates it should be 10,000iu's per day, see here. Take care Wray

Progesterone application
by: G..Z

Dear Wray,

Thanks for your information. Actually after miscarriage in July 2010 I had formed a cyst in my ovary and doctors told me not to try for baby. Six months were passed so. After that I had irregular periods. Doctors said that due to to cyst she can not give me clomid etc for ovulation so she reffered me to surgeon. In may 2011 I had a laparoscopy and my cyst was removed and also my left tube was opened. Since then gynochologist is giving me clomid plus other medicines. After I registered to a fertility hospital where I had my first IUI last month. So my two years have been waisted. So dear Wray I read your writings I feel that I should use Progesterone but I dont know how to use it. Is it possible that I ask doctor to give me some progesterone cream. You told me to open capsule and mix it in some natural skin cream. My question is that can i use it during periods or after it; before ovulation or after ovulation. Please guide me in this regard. Tomorrow I will ask doctor to give me Vitamin D test. Thanks a lot dear Wray.

Progesterone application
by: Wray

Hi GZ Ovarian cysts often disappear after using progesterone, but of course that would mean less money for the doctor! Am I being very cynical?! I only suggested opening the progesterone caps as you said you had them. If the doctor gives you a progesterone cream, I doubt he would give you a high enough amount. I normally suggest 100-200mg/day, but feel you would do better on the 200mg/day, you might need more, but only by trying it can you tell. We do have a page on How to use progesterone cream which explains everything. But please read our page on Oestrogen Dominance first. Take care Wray

Smelly periods after using progesterone
by: G.Z

Dear Wray,

Thanks alot for guiding me so much regarding progesterone. I went to the new doctor which did not hear a word and just gave me all the blood tests from the scratch like day 3-4 of cycle (FSH ), huhner test etc from the start. So I could not request to give me vitamin D test or progesterone cream. However I have decided not to rely totally on doctors because I am fed up of blood tests and echographies(ultra sound). I have just bought a vitamine D supplement (some fish oil capsules) and started taking it. For progesterone I will use it from this cycle as per your guidance.

I have a question regarding porgesterone capsules which I utilised 400 mg per day during last cycle after IUI. My period did not come normally rather brown spotting remained for a day and so. It was just like the spotting I experienced after my miscarriage. The difference is that it was really very smelly and just like yeast odor. I am really worried because I have read about yeast infection. Please tell me that is it the effect of a high amount of progesterone or I have a new problem of infection? I hope you will have something to tell me in this regard. Thanks alot for reading my lengthy writings but you are the only hope for me on internet. Thank you and have a nice weekend.

Smelly periods after using progesterone
by: Wray

Hi GZ Oh dear, that seems normal, not hearing a word about all the tests you had done. You say you've bought some fish oil capsules, are they cod liver oil, if so please don't take them. They have far too much vitamin A in them, and this inhibits the uptake of vitamin D, see here, here and here. And if they are omega 3 fish oil caps, these don't have any vitamin D in them, unless it's been added. Please check the bottle, and see how much vitamin D is in each cap. It should be a minimum of 5000iu's, and no vitamin A. It really is best to have a test done, as it could be your level is very low, in which case you'll need 10,000 to 20,000iu's per day for 2-3 months. Birmingham Hospital in the UK send out test kits for £25, please consider doing this. The brown spotting means old blood, this is probably causing the smell. A Candida infection normally causes itching. And were you opening the caps as I suggested and adding them to a cream? Or is this what you mean when you say 'as per your guidance', so you are referring to how you took them. 400mg/day is a very low amount when taken orally, see our page on Delivery systems for more info. If you do start using the caps as I suggest next cycle, please read the page on Oestrogen Dominance, as you'll find a big difference. I also feel you might have a heavy bleed, with more brown blood. This is good if it happens, as it means the uterus is being cleaned out. Take care Wray

About vitamin D supplements of Cod liver oil
by: Anonymous

Dear Wray,

Sorry for late reply as I was very busy last week. However when I saw your comments to stop the cod liver oil capsules I immediately stopped taking them. Today I have translated french into English which is as follows:

"The cod liver oil provide fatty acids polynsatures series of omega 3 and vitamins A and D. This oil contributes to a harmonious growth of the child and the maintenance of bone mass in the elderly. Moreover it allows to preserve the youthfulness of the skin.
Orally. 1 capsule morning and evening (a day, 550 mg of cod liver oil, 374 ug of vitamin A palmitate (46.8% RDA) of vitamin D 3.125ug (62.5% RDA) was taken with a full glass of water." Now please guide me should I re start them or not. Thanks alot and have a great weekend.

About vitamin D supplements of Cod liver oil
by: Wray

Hi GZ I don't believe you should take them, but will have to leave it to you. I've given you those papers about the effects of vitamin A on the vitamin D. This is a chart showing the composition of cod live oil. If you feel you need vitamin A at any time, any liver has high amounts. That's if you don't mind eating liver! Take care Wray

P in Oil Shot Leakage
by: Anonymous

Dear Wray,

I've been taking progesterone in oil shots after having an embryo transfer. I've had a positive pregnancy test and am continuing the 1 ccs of progesterone in oil, but sometimes the oil leaks out even though my husband waits 10 seconds before removing the needle. Should we try to inject more oil? There is no way to know how much leaked out, but both of my hands were covered in oil this last time.

Thanks in advance.
