How much Progesterone should I use?

by Laurie
(Los Angeles)

Hi Wray,

I have been on BHRT since 2009 using both estrogen and progesterone. I was on a high dose of estrogen over the course of the years and 2 months ago I decided to reduce E and increase P by using your product. I am still on 1 click of E a day which contains 1 mg estradiol and .5mg estriol. Since my last drop of E I am fighting the urge to increase because I feel so bad. Over those 2 months I have increased P and was on around 266.50 per day of P but decided to try increasing only last night so yesterday in total I applied around 410 mg of P. I don't expect miracles overnight but I did sleep terrible and woke up feeling irritated and sad. They are not new feelings but I had hoped to feel some relief with the increase. In general I feel irritated, overwhelmed, angry, sad, and sometimes hopeless. I find myself making mistakes at work and yesterday I almost got into a car accident which would've been my fault. My brain is not so sharp. I need it to be because I have a very demanding job and I need my job. I'm checking in with you to see if you have any suggestions on how to proceed. My reluctance to drop the E entirely comes from when I first went into menopause (age 39) and remembering how terrible I felt then. Hot flashes and chest tightness that was unbearable. I do not want to go back to that and I feel the E helped greatly. I am open to new ideas and would appreciate any advice or direction you can offer.

Thank you,

Laurie

How much Progesterone should I use?

Hi Laurie

I don't believe that any woman needs to take extra estrogen. There are over 100 estrogen mimics in our environment and in the food that we eat as it is, see Our Stolen Future. The use of estrogen will keep you in an estrogen dominant state causing Estrogen Dominance symptoms. The aim with progesterone therapy, is to make it the dominant hormone. Only when this happens, will relief be found. So I am not surprised that you feel irritated, overwhelmed etc.

I agree with you increasing the amount of progesterone to 410mg but, does the cream that you are using have the correct progesterone concentration? I feel that you need to use 400-500mg, possibly more progesterone to get you over this and suggest that you stop using the estrogen. Please read the How to use Progesterone Cream, HRT and Menopause pages.

Do you know what your Vitamin D level is as a deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone.

Hope this helps.
