Hair thinning

by Carrie
(England)

My bloods were done ... Progesterone(serum) 0.5 nmol , serum testosterone 0.4 , serum oestradiol 406 pmol, I have been using progesterone cream but hair is still thinning and frizzy. I am also on thyroxine which is at present right level . I read avena sativa could increase testosterone and thought may help my hair to thicken but am unsure , also I think my oestradiol is normal but thought eostrogen was the hormone to help thicken hair, please can you advise me thnx

Hi Carrie If I look at the ratio between your progesterone and oestrogen, i.e. 1.23:1 I'm really surprised you're not complaining about dozens of other symptoms. My ratio when I was tested was 5:1, and I was a basket case! We do have a page on Hormone Testing you could look through. We run Saliva Tests periodically, and have found from these the ratio should be 600:1 to feel well. Hair Loss can be caused by many things, but the commonest cause is testosterone. Particularly in older women. Your blood tests reveal you to be in Peri-menopause. Progesterone at rock bottom, with oestradiol in the normal range. Progesterone certainly helps hair, hence the lovely hair many pregnant women have. There are also a number of other nutrients which help, all listed on the page I've given. Please have a vitamin D test done, it's vital for healthy hair too. You live in the UK so your level is probably low. For more info on vitamin D levels, test kits etc see the Vitamin D Council, GrassrootsHealth and Birmingham Hospital. Blood levels should be 70-100ng/ml (175-250nmol/L) and not the 30ng/ml (75nmol/L) most labs and doctors regard as adequate. The minimum daily dose should be 5000iu's per day, although recent research indicates it should be 10,000iu's per day, see here. If you'd like to chat to someone about progesterone and vitamin D, please contact Julienne via her website here. She is also a registered EFT therapist, a wonderful therapy. Take care Wray

Hi Carrie Your ratio of P:E2 has gone up which is a good sign, but it's only 94:1, still too low to my mind. It's evident you are not using sufficient progesterone, you don't say how much and I forgot to ask you. It should be 100-200mg/day, more if symptoms are severe. The hair loss page I gave you makes suggestions too. Have you had a vitamin D test done, and are you taking it? Are you taking any of the nutrients I suggested to you? Progesterone alone is not going be the cure all, it does need help. Vitamin D being essential, as a low level of this reduces the benefits of progesterone. Please have that test one, please take those nutrients on the hair loss page, and please take vitamin D. Unless you have that test you won't know how much to take to raise your level. it's essential for hair growth. Take care Wray

Hi Carrie Although your level is above 'adequate' according the to the NHS, their cut off is 50nmol/L, it's much lower than the specialists recommend. Their minimum is 125nmol/L, although some believe it should range from 175 to 250nmol/L. I suggest you take 10,000iu per day to get yours up, and then have another test after 3 months with this dose. The 40mg/day progesterone you were using is making you lethargic and tired, it's very low. The 100mg/day might be sufficient, it's the minimum I recommend. You'll have to experiment, you might find you need more. Star flower oil is fine, but I would avoid the cod liver oil as it contains too much vitamin A. This inhibits the uptake of vitamin D, see here, here, here and here. Take care Wray
