Continued high-dose useage?

by Elaine S.
(New Springfield, OH)

Against my doc's recommendation of using 60 mg (once daily) max of natural progesterone, I am using a combo of Natpro and Prometrium approx. 250 mg divided/daily (no breaks) which has helped my heavy bleeding and intense itching/flaking on and around my ears.

Will I ever be able to reduce the amount used?

I am 44 (only problem is lack of ovulation or rare ovulation) with NO signs of peri-menopause... Using natural progesterone daily prevents ovulation therefore a form of birth control?

Thanks.

Hi Elaine Yes you will be able to reduce the amount you use, but only do so when you feel stable. And reduce slowly over a few weeks. If you find symptoms come back, increase to the amount you had reduced from and remain on that level until symptoms go. Then continue reducing again. I'm pleased the progesterone has helped the heavy bleeding, it should. Although I've found levels of 400mg/day are normally needed. Progesterone also inhibits mast cells, which are involved in the itching, see here. Progesterone can act as a contraceptive by preventing ovulation, so if you still wish to ovulate, I suggest you start following your cycle. We have more info about this on our page How to use progesterone cream. Take care Wray
