Are progesterone tabs safe?

by Reshma
(Mumbai)

I am pregnant by about 5 weeks. My gyno has prescribed me gestone tablets (progesterone 200 mg). Is it safe to consume it? Since I am 26 yrs of age, is it necessary to take these tablets? I am extremely worried.

Are progesterone tabs safe?

Hi Reshma. Don't be worried. You are obviously at risk of a miscarriage which is why your gyno has prescribed Gestone.

Although to my mind it would be better to use them as suppositories because oral progesterone is mostly destroyed as it travels through the gut and liver which leaves only about 10-20% available. Take care Wray

I am 6 weeks pregnant
by: andrea p

I had a miscarriage 6 months ago and I am now 6 weeks pregnant. My Dr just prescribed me prometrium 200mg a day until I am 14 weeks. Is this safe?

Is there a difference between the capsule, the injection, and the suppository? I told my Dr I wanted whichever was most effective and she said they are all the same.

Hi Andrea Sorry I missed your query. Prometrium is safe, and is prescribed for miscarriages. And there is a huge difference between the three. Oral progesterone is mostly destroyed by the gut and liver, so it's the most ineffective method. This is the reason the synthetic progestins were developed. The injections are painful! The suppositories are the best of the three, as the progesterone is absorbed well, and there is no pain. Please see our page on Progesterone application methods Take care Wray
