Acne

by Cindy
(Florida)

I first had acne when I was 15 years old. My family doctor prescribed something for me and it worked. After having my first child, six months later I was pregnant with my second child. About 10-12 months after having my second child I started getting acne again and before getting pregnant with my third child about six months after the acne started I also put on 10 pounds.

Once I was pregnant, within 3 months the weight I gained everywhere was again just in my belly "All Baby", my skin cleared up again. Three months after having my daughter I got my tubes tied and within five months of that I gained 24 pounds, that's what I gained with each pregnancy. My skin broke out horribly. Nothing the doctor prescribed would help. I finally found an over the counter homeopathic product that kept my skin in check most of the time, and I started working out 3-4 days a week just to take off the weight and really watch my diet. This was ten years ago.

Over the last couple of years I haven't worked out and the weight is much harder to lose and seems to be at a stand still right now, and my skin breaks out worse than it use to even when using the same product. I am certain my hormones are completely out of wack. I want my skin I had when I was pegnant and the metabolism I had when I was pregnant. After each one of my children I bounced back within 10 days to my 131 lbs. size 3/4. I wasn't a size 3/4 before my first pregnancy I was a 9/10. That's the size I wear now. I'm assuming that my hormones have been out of wack since I was 15 because my skin nor my metabolism was what it was during my pregnancy or up to 10 months after my pregnancies.

I used Natpro for the first time last month for the 2 week period specified, however I still had some cream left. I'm sure I wasn't using enough because I had some cream left and my skin broke out soooooo bad I thought I was 15 again. I haven't had any bloodwork done because of the expense. I spoke to a natural hormone replacement doctor about a year ago and couldn't afford the $1000 fee, but he told me he prescribes a progesterone cream to women that have had their tubes tied because many times the tube that distributes the progesterone gets tied off and causes weight gain.

Also, I was told my skin was so great because during pregnancy women's progesterone levels are so high that's what causes the natural glow.

What is your take on this?

After dealing with acne for 11 years and hitting a plateau with weight loss, I am really anxious to hear your response to my issues. I do have other symptoms like, cramping the first day of my menstrual cycle, breast tenderness, and retaining water, but my biggest concerns are that I'm 33 years old and I am still dealing with acne and even though I'm not obese I know what my weight was after each pregnancy and I want to know if I'm right in my assumption that my hormones are completely out of wack. Most women gain weight during pregnancy and after and have to worry about losing it, but not me I loved it because I would bounce right back to 131 lbs. Please tell me if I am on the right track in my assumption?

Hi Cindy Yes you are right. Progesterone levels rise to over 400ng/ml in the third trimester. It's also slightly thermogenic too, so does speed metabolism a bit, which helps the weight loss. No one need have Acne, it's caused by excess testosterone. Progesterone does help suppress it. But testosterone only rises if SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) drops. The drop can be caused by sugars, fructose being the worst. Even the hidden sugars, like those found in all grains, legumes and sweet starchy fruit and veggies. All these foods should be avoided, and of course any food or drink containing the sugars. I would suggest you use the progesterone daily, during your period too, for about 2-3 months. This will help to suppress any excess testosterone or oestrogen you have. Plus look at our page on Nutrition, in particular Dr Cordain's website called the Paleo Diet. He's studied acne and found it only occurs if blood glucose is unstable. The raw food diet, also mentioned on the nutrition page, is an excellent way to loose weight. For more info on using progesterone daily see our page on How to use progesterone cream. I don't believe you are using enough, I suggest 100-200mg/day, which is 3-6ml of Natpro per day. As each tube contains 60ml, 3 ml means a tube will last 10 days. If you do increase the amount, please see our page on Oestrogen Dominance, as it can occur. And the tubal ligation has caused most of your problems, see here. It is possible to reverse, see here. Take care Wray
